Playing persimmon and classic blades, day in, day out.

yeah its absurd and its people shoot in the 90s and 100s saying they need the latest tech to stay current. They just want to spend money and they can if they wish and but they are being very silly about "staying current". Find clubs you like to play , change them around based on what's happening with YOUR game and don't make it sound like the latest smartphones please!

IMG_1743.jpeg.cf044c0f2531d07964ad47cb314aeec6.jpegOk slightly on original topic and definitely more towards what has been discussed in the last few posts. Now not saying I’m gonna be playing these on a daily basis. Recent thrift store pickup. Just hit them for the first time. Shocking how good they are, how playable they are and how modern they actually feel. Definitely not a sweet spot the size of a dime. If you could hit a shot with a blind fold on you WOULD NOT KNOW these are 1953-55 irons. I was pretty amazed.

As for my playing ability I don’t have an official handicap but a free app I use has me at 12.7. 40 years playing and I still usually find a way to butcher 2-3 holes as if I’m just learning to play.  I’m the perfect candidate to “lower my scores” with modern equipment. Funny how it hasn’t, maybe next years stuff will.

Yeah marketing is a powerful thing that has always worked

Those look exactly like a set of Robert T Jones Jr, SS TrueTemper "T" shaft & I changed the grips. They just say registered, no mention of Kro-Flite, so they might be from same time period. Loverly clubs. Congrats on the play....oh, why bother w/keeping score? Why not just focus on placement of ball where you want it to go....eventually it'll end up in that wee hole on the green.🤣

I’m still floored how good these felt. No wonder you have no desire for moderns! My oldest clubs before these were 55 Haigs, 59 CF’s, 67 Tourney M/T’s. You really have to swing the Mac’s properly but all are good. You do know they aren’t a modern club when you’re playing them in comparison to these though. I’ve started the search to fill out my half set. May have located a few.

Great clubs I’ve got three sets with the original regular flex rocket shafts and original grips.  Mine are all from 1954. 2-10i plus wedges.

Now I only play vintage but these are my oldest irons.  And as far as scores go my best round at a par 3 course I play often was with these ‘54s.

13 clubs, where is that 54 1 iron?

Glad you tried these and I couldn’t agree more with your assessment.  I’ve played a handful of different irons from the 50’s, a few different sets of pro line Mac’s, a set of Golfcrafts, and some PGA Burke and didn’t really enjoy any of them.  My 54 Spalding Top Flites on the other hand are a joy to play.  Easy to hit with great feel.  Not as butter smooth as some of my newer forged blades, but still a clean crisp feel when well struck.  These have become my go to set whenever I want to play a 50’s setup.

Although I enjoy playing my 59 FC4000s 67 Tourney’s or 76 Apex’s and others these are definitely different and in a good way. Even the big rounded top line is reminiscent of 90’s Callaway irons. Not to turn this into a Spalding fan boy thread but how far has iron technology really come in 70 years???  These are really that good in my honest hacker opinion. Was just trying to figure out the pitching wedge  on the range. 58 degrees minimum on my protractor phone App but what a low profile digger.  The stainless steel is such a ‘crack’ sound yet has a bit of feel in your hands and again you don’t have to hit the center for it to go somewhere. I’m sure there is others out there and I’d love to find more but in my uneducated mind modern starts here.

I'm a hacker and probably one of the newest golfers here still.   But from my short time at this.  I've tried pretty much every MacGregor set from 1955-1986 and every Wilson Staff from 1958-1968.  Those two brands command the higher value on the used market too but the Spalding Top Flite lines that were out at the same time were just as good if not better IMO.  It's totally the sleeper vintage line.  You can't giveaway some of the 60s sets.  They are all slightly longer too which works for me.  Spalding was onto something for many many years.

So fanboy away!

Those faces are so cool! Also the bright colors are a neat touch. Guess I thought that was Spalding’s (Synchro-Dyned) deal but sure we are talking about the same time period so makes sense.

My 59 CF4000’s hit the ball very high also even with the stiff Propel 1 shafts. Just looking at the thin overall design of the Mac’s they don’t look super bottom weight loaded. Maybe the supposed extra spin from the ceramic gives em the extra height
