Course recommendation

I have a chance to be heading to Ballyneal in August and was wondering what a good course to play the day I fly in would be? I have the majority of the day, but won't be able to play Ballyneal until the next day. So basically anything North/Northeast of Denver I guess? I have never golfed in the area and know nothing about it. I looked a little bit at the new TPC course, but the TPC name scares me a bit. Any suggestions?

We will be doing the same thing in September and the plan is Commonground, the Doak course in the south-east part of Denver. It should be a reasonable drive to arrive at BN in time for dinner.

If you are wanting links style, I'd much rather play Riverdale Dunes, it is also on the east side of town to avoid extra driving and traffic. Green Valley Ranch is also along the way and a good course. I've only played Commonground once and just didn't care for it. Could have been because of the group we followed, slow and no class, almost drove their carts on the greens. Mower lady finally chewed them out on the back 9.

How good really? Better than Bear Dance, Fossil Trace or Commonground for example? In other words should it replace one of those courses in our upcoming trip?

Really, really good. You should absolutely replace Fossil or Commonground with TPC. Bear Dance is wooded and TPC is links, so the juxtaposition of playing them back to back could be really fun. I'd rank the courses listed:

1. TPC Colorado

2. Bear Dance

3. Commonground

4. Fossil Trace

Bear Dance is a terrific course! Riverdale Dunes is also a pretty good track. I am not a Pete Dye fan generally but I really like what he did at Riverdale Dunes. I have yet to play the TCP even though I reside in Northern Colorado.

I liked the layout of TPC, just a fun course with lots of different shots.

 

However, the day we played it it was so wet it didn’t play anywhere near how I suspect it is supposed to play. We actually had balls plugging so you couldn’t play the ball along the ground. And it appears that there are a lot of opportunities to play that type shot.

 

I would like to play it again when it is firm and running. But to be honest, for the price, there are a lot of other area options I would choose instead.

 

OP, if you don’t mind a bit of drive out of the way (just a bit longer than TPC would be), Highland Meadows in Windsor is a very enjoyable course for less than half the price.
