Golf Bag Necessities

Recommended Posts

I recently just made the switch over from a stand bag to a cart bag for my push cart and while it is a nice change, I just can't seem to fill the pockets on it. Currently my bag has the basics, some rain gear, the Watson Hanger training aid, and the Selfie Golf kit, but outside of that I'm at a loss for what else I may need on the course. What do you all find are necessities to have in the bag?

I keep a small case with band aids, sunscreen, chapstick etc. Other than that just a small bag with tees, markers, divot tools, some balls a couple gloves and thats really it. I dont carry any training aids or rain gear unless it is looking like it could rain. Typically I try to keep my bag as light as possible. The things I need the most are the essentials, balls, water, maybe a Cliff Bar and that's really it.

In addition to the above, I carry a pair of rain gloves, a roll of medical tape (can be used in place of band-aids for minor cuts/blisters/etc), bug spray, a small bag of change for vending machines, the tool to adjust my driver and my laser rangefinder. I also keep a ziplock bag for sealing my phone and wallet if it rains hard because I know my bag's pockets aren't waterproof. IMHO, not being able to fill all your pockets is a good thing. Even with a pushcart there is no use carrying extra weight you don't need.

Insect repellent wipes, a small can of Neutrogena sunscreen spray, a roll of golfers tape (a stretchy version of medical tape), a few replacement spikes and a spike wrench, a couple extra golf gloves, a pouch with tees, divot repair tool and ball markers. The rain hood for the bag is also always in my bag. My cart bag always has an umbrella in it. My stand bag rarely does. I'll throw a couple protein bars and a couple bottles of water in when I leave the house. The wrench for adjusting my driver may or may not be in my bag. It depends on whether I've been screwing around with it on the driving range and forgot to take it out of the bag or not.

> Was it hard to give up the stand bag? I am contemplating the change, but I sure can't get used to the set up of today's cart bags. I've used a stand bag for 25 years, and have been avoiding strap on the front.

It was more for sentimental reasons more than anything, however I do like my cart bag now that I have it even if I went with a cheaper option. Around Christmas time I may upgrade to a little bit higher quality bag and donate this one to a relative, but now that I no longer carry and only push I have to say I really enjoy the extra space. I'm not one to bring many snacks or anything, however dual water bottle pockets and an insulated pocket bodes very well in the humid midwest summers

I could get by with almost no pockets on a golf bag. About 95% of my rounds are played at my home course where I have a locker and there are water coolers on every other tee box. Balls, tees, a pocket to hold my keys and some place to stash a sandwich or snack and I'm good to go.

My main problem is the lack of a way to carry a sand bottle on most push carts. My current SM Speed Cart has a nice net slung between the wheels but it's about the only model I know of nowadays with that feature and not all of the Speed Cart models have that.

The ClicGear sand bottle can be mounted to any cart with 1" (or less) tubing.

I think an easier question would be what **don't** I have in my cart bag. I emptied out the pockets last fall, and there were 57 golf balls in the pockets.

In addition to the usual stuff mentioned above, including rain gear/gloves/umbrela at all times (it always seems to rain when I leave the gear in the car), I have a clothesline and folding hangar for airing out wet rain gear between the storms, an ace bandage, a tennis/golf elbow brace, lead tape, way too many poker chips, winter golf gloves, a knit winter hat and ear warmers, a full length waterproof rain cover, two plastic garbage bags, a scorecard holder, a belt attached smartphone case (used when I take pics on vacation without having to leave the phone in the cart), two USB cables, and insect repellent.

Yes, I have one of those that fits my SpeedCart. I go through the sand in that little bottle in maybe 4-5 divots. Sometimes I fix that many on a single fairway.

The course supplies the big bottles, like riding carts use, but they are only near the first tee and at one other place on each nine. The little bottles just don't carry enough sand to do much good. I suppose if there were refilling stations every three holes I could make do with it but it would be a constant struggle.

And I generally carry two of the big bottles. Filling divots gives me something productive to do during slow solo rounds behind foursomes.

It's one reason I almost never shoulder-carry my bag instead of using the trolley. A big bottle of sand seems to double the weight of the bag (I know it's way less than that but it feels like twice as heavy).

It is annoying that courses don't do more to help the walkers who want to fill divots. Practically no courses have sand/seed near the 1st hole to fill the bottle, so I usually wind up "stealing" mix from a cart. Few courses have bottle exchange stands at the 10th. Only a handful have exchange stands near the midpoints of each nine. Many courses have mix on the par 3's, and I can top off if the bucket isn't empty.

I also spend time filling divots to kill time during slow rounds. I think my record was 8 or 9 full bottles. Just like ball marks on the greens, I have no idea why so many divot holes go unfilled when most electric carts have two mix bottles.

I often see those that do ride fill their divot with the chunk that was taken out rather than the mix. Ball marks on the green drive me insane, like how does that not bother people when they are putting? But I guess most of the ones that don't fix their ball mark are also the same people that can't get a ball to hold the green from inside 120 yards
