Help with my driver swing please.

Recommended Posts

I’m hitting the middle of the face a LOT of the time, but it seems to be absolutely random the face’s relation to the path. So I’ll hit a draw, a fade, a hook, a block, a pull etc. I have no idea where to aim. Random.

Also, I’ll usually get scared and stop my body and either snap hook, or smother hook the ball most often.

Lastly, I’ve lost a ridiculous amount of clubhead speed in the last 10 years. Most of it is fear, I am sure, due to not knowing where the ball is going. So I can’t bring myself to “swing hard”.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks very much.

Thanks Justin. So preset the draw or the fade with the setup? I’ll definitely look into that and experiment.

My SwingSpeedRadar gets here Friday and I’ll be doing the swing speed protocols 3 days a week as per the instructions. I hope that’ll get me swinging faster. I used to swing 113-ish. Now I’m lucky to hit 100. Most often 94-98. And every time I try to “step on it” and ramp the speed up, I’m even worse knowing where it’s going. If that’s even possible.

Thanks for taking a look.

That swing looked great! Maybe share one where you had one of the struggles you mentioned.

Yes exactly.

Draw: ball up in your stance and feet positioned slightly closed (to the right)

Fade: ball a hair more back in stance than usual and open stance a bit

(DO NOT MODIFY SWING ACTUAL SWING)

Essentially if you are struggling and looking for consistency, experiment with a go-to setup and see which one is most reliable.

Are you using the same club, shaft flex as you always have? Or, perhaps have a different club, shaft flex, that links back to when the issues started?

Looking at your video in 0.25x speed, at the top of your backswing I think there is a big 'whip' effect, so, in my very amateur, hack ability knowledge, wonder if you are getting face angle issues due to the shaft flex?

Looks to me like you are about 50% all in. Your driver is not set up to be swung with that amount of trust/energy. That is when the hooks start happening because your lower half quits while the upper rotates around. You have to swing to completion regardless of what you are trying to accomplish with the ball. Instead you throttled down to try and straighten your shot out which is good thinking but wont solve your issues. I suggest playing a little bit with face angle or the position of the ball. Sometimes we are set to double cross ourselves with an open stance and a shut face or an closed stance and a open face. If you want to get serious about fixing it. Next time you are on the range, take a note book out and write down your stance set up (alignment sticks might help if you want to have a reference point) and then set up the club in different ways, and take a full effort 85% swing and see what the results are. I did it for myself and it works. It took me a good amount of range time, but when I found out for me that right inside my instep with a slightly closed face ( to my eye) gave me a green light to swing for the fences and it works. After that, I worked on my preshot routine to get me to setup in that fashion each time I have the driver out. Try it out and hope it helps.

Thanks for the comments. Very good advice.

As you prescribed, I’m trying to get through the ball better. It’s still not happening very well. I doubt I’ll have a consistent ball flight until I get through the ball. As you say, too much “stalling out” with my left side and lower body doesn’t let the club swing on a consistent arc.

I’ll try your suggestions next time I get to the range.

Backswing looks greatand I don't know if it has anything to do with the shaft flex that may make strike inconsistent. But, looking at your footwork everything looks good until impact when your trail foot looks like it actually slides in to your front foot, almost on a parallel plane. It could of been a slip, it looks like you're wearing sneakers (Nice J's btw) but this could also be a sign that you aren't getting any way to your right side, causing you to lose speed and potentially get handsy at impact.
