Old course conditions/closed

Saw a crazy picture of St Andrews today. Does this happen often? Obviously the area gets a lot of rain I figure it takes something special for the course to be like this and shut down. I'm playing there on the 20th, and a lot of rain in the forecast has me worried.

I was at North Berwick on Friday with what I assume was the same biblical rain. The course was closed for 1.5 hours then it was fine, no sign of standing water.

I recall play being suspended during the second round of the Open in 2015 but resumed later that day. Links courses tend to drain pretty quickly and only need an hour or so after the rain has stopped for it to be cleared. That's what happened at the Open at least.

We had something similar at North Berwick last Sunday, but not tons of rain - uncharacteristic thunder clouds and hail cost me a putt for par on the 10th, lol - decided just to putt through it than try and brush it out of there, then took cover. Course closed mid-afternoon, we had to walk in from the 11th - long walk, lol. Did get a refund of 1/2 our green fees - luckily had prearranged a tee time for Monday because I gambled on really wanting to play it twice, which I did. Unbelievable rain while on the M8 Wednesday, lucky to be in a traffic jam from Edinburgh to Glasgow and traffic was slow. Our trip started with some really nice days, interspersed with rain, then pretty much just rain off and on. But, I agree, the courses tend to soak that up pretty quickly.

The rain that we have had in the past week has almost been off the charts. I can barely remember ever seeing it rain as much as it has been. Most courses were closed for a day but all were back up and running relatively swiftly. Hopefully it stays better for you and you enjoy your time here.

It looks like the weather forecast has been getting better. I know I probably shouldn't even look as it changes basically hourly. How do the courses hold up with this rain? Playing Kingsbarns and North Berwick outside of St Andrews. I've been pumped up about hitting low irons and getting run out, I feel I may not be getting that. ?

The soil underneath them is so sandy that they tend to absorb the rain about as good as you could hope for. Unless something biblical happens, I would be surprised if you didn’t get the golf in that you are looking to. Stinger wise, you will still get some but this summer has been the polar opposite of last summer.

I looked at the Old Course webcams today and I could still see puddles on 17/18. Not large, but still there.
