Masters week 2020 One + hour away golf course suggestions?

Well we finally got tickets, a practice round on Tuesday , we are from the northeast and will be making a 5 day trip to the area. My wife ( a good golfer and I) looking for suggestions for courses in the 1-2 hour range away from Augusta Including N, S and east. Nothing fancy, just an enjoyable to play. Likely our first rounds of the year. We will likely fly in and out of Atlanta, friends in Alpharetta or possibly Charlotte either one will be renting a car.

 

anything come to mind? One that has basic hotel lodging nearby would also be a bonus

Arrive very very early and leaving late is our plan Tuesday's practice round- getting up really early is in the plan.

We played Furman's course this past year. Pretty nice and awesome rates. Ended up staying in Greenwood SC. Pretty convenient.

Its 1 hour west of The National but Harbor Club on Lake Oconee is pretty sweet. Should be ~$100 to play.

Athens area would be my choice. UGA golf course is great, as is The Georgia Club. Athens CC and Jennings Mill are private, but I have heard they may offer limited public times during Masters Week.

 

There’s a couple other cool tracks just out of town (20ish minutes): The Providence Club, The Chimneys, and Lane Creek. Not at the level of those above, but in my visits have had good conditions and are interesting layouts.

 

On top of all of that Athens is, IMO, the best college town in America. There will be plenty to do, eat, and drink. Plenty of hotels and rentals too.

Several years back my wife and I went to a practice round and we stayed in Lexington, SC and enjoyed it. It was about an hour to Augusta. The hotels had jacked up Masters rates (about 3x normal), but luckily I had a enough points (points per night were same as normal) to book a room for a couple of nights. There are a number of decent public courses in the Columbia area that fit your description of "nothing fancy just an enjoyable to play". Cobblestone Park (home course of the USC golf team) being the best IMO.

Another vote for the Athens area courses. Great food, bars/restaurants, and golf courses.

If you fly into Charlotte, look at Cobblestone Park. It would be about half way to Augusta. 27 holes, semi-private, was in good shape the one time I stumbled upon the course in mid-April a few years ago. Then you could look to stay in Columbia, which is about an hour drive away from Augusta and should have a decent selection of mid-range hotel options.

 

Also, not sure if you can find a hotel in Aiken but if so, Aiken Golf Club has been getting a lot of good press lately. Not sure what their Masters week rates are, either...

Suggest you take a look at the Monticello and Tara golf courses at Savannah Lakes Village, South Carolina. SLV is about 40 miles west of Augusta. ( right on the SC-GA state line. The courses are both quite nice and always in good condition. The Monticello course hosted a Hooters tour event for 14 years. They have a "Play the Lake" special Masters week for 100 dollars. Very affordable accomodations are available at Hickory Knob State Park and Resort which is about 3 or 4 miles away. Hickory has both lodge rooms and cabins for rent. There is a third golf course at the park--but I have not played it. This place seems to meet your specifications well, i.e. close, affordable, and good golf. Look on U-Tube for Monticello golf for fly-over. I think you will be impressed. Hope this helpful.
