Implements of Precision (aka The One Iron)

Recommended Posts

A very nice '83-'85 barber razor indeed!

I have a lovely '66 Scotch blade razor that i don't mind sharing, and a few other razors too that are dangerously sharp.

I have to keep them locked up at night so my kids won't cut themselves

LOL I did not have to go to Royal Troon to do that yesterday----- Went right across US 17 to Indigo Creek GC----- Man the wind was bad yesterday and yes I carried my old 985 Armour 1 iron and of course it has been Hoganized would you expect any less from me? Hit a bunch of punch cut shots with it. One hole wind dead in my face I had to hit my 22* hybrid at 150 yards ( normally blade 7 iron) It did the balloon thing on me and I said no more. From then on I hit the punch cut 1 iron shots

Sounds like you had a lot of fun out there, maybe frustrating but challanging and fun... man that wind must of been really nasty, that 22° hybrid sounded like the right choice but still popped up! Good that you got the Scottish links experience without the cost of flying to Troon, Haha.

I need to work on my long iron game and get the low penetrating punches happening before my big links golf tour later on. (Im here in Australia and all the good links courses are way down south on coast towards Antarcica and i really need to work on my Tom Watson game. I should get the Ram Watson 'Troon grind' wedge celebrating his '82 British open victory. 56° but narrow sole and nearly zero bounce for pitching off the hard pan fairways.

Would be good for interest sake, but i do love my Wilson wedges. I've heared you say how you love the wilson J.P wedges of late 70's early 80's, isn't that true!?!

The Dyna-powered wedges with black plug are great, but you like the newer J.P ones from later on just as good if not better!?!.

This is what i just got off ebay to go with my Wilson FG-17 irons.

Heard the 1958 Dyna-powered is the best but couldnt find it anywhere.

3AV33BBRSSNE.jpgIt was only $30 or so, i heard the original Dyna-powered would cost me hundreds more, so maybe its almost as good but heaps cheaper?

OH yeah absolutely I love the old JPs and have quite a few of them--- Yep IMHO they are as good if not better than the Dynapowers. My problem is I am a wedge ho and have so many great wedges I can not play them all so I rotate out

thats good to hear from someone with lots of playing experience about the J.P's being as good if not better. See all the golf guide books i read on classic clubs are written before 1980 and before the J.P's had come out.

So the dynapowers may be considered the best from before 1980 according to some, but after that time others have since been release that are excellent like the Wilson J.P and the cleveland 588.

Cool that you got so many different wedges to use. I've only just got into golf last year and i started out focused so much on how far i can hit the drive and the quicker i get down to near the green then the better golfer i will become, spent all of my practice time down at the driving range. but now i started to realise how important 100yards and in is, and the wedge game and putting.

My first set was a brand new 2018 cleveland launch HB cavity back set voted number 1 in super game inprovement catagory, haha, Then i got into classic blades from 40's-90's and want to experience what they used back in the good old days before these high forgiveness clubs came out.

Something really interesting to me in the history of how the club designs have changed, especially from the change of hickory shaft to steel in 1930 till metal drivers in late 80's.

1940's-1980's tour blades and persimmons have taken over my interest!

You seem to know a lot about that stuff Big Stu and always posting interesting comments!

Currently sacrificing the self for the greater good (aka working), when I get a chance, I'll have to see about scrounging up pics of my 1 irons. Have a few of them lying around.

I play Scottish links golf and always carry a 1 or 2 iron in my vintage set up. Very versatile club and hugely satisfying when you flush one under the wind. Here is one of my recent additions to my 1 iron collection. I believe it is an original '60's but know MacGregor remade the SS1's in the 80's. Remakes

YVTGSAHXLQHA.jpg

TYRZFQ5HH75C.jpg I have seen have yellow in the ferrule bands and no sign of s shaft pin which mine has but rear side only. Anyone help with confirming the vintage of my 1 iron?

Steve I was going to disagree with you at first but re read and he stated it had the "pin" only on one side. I think you are correct but I can not ever recall ever seeing a fake pin only on one side and it is also stamped Jack Nicklaus and Jack was in diapers when the originals were made

They are remakes made in 1986. They are forged with a satin chrome finish, and are pinned like the originals from 1958. The sets were made to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of jack Niclaus turning pro. He played SS1's from 1961 until he switched to VIP's in 1967. he won many majors with these clubs. The commemorative set included a six screw 945 style driver, 693 style 3-wood, 1-SW SS1 ceramic face irons, and a George Low Wizard 600 style putter. All clubs had the black Lamkin leather grips with the gold bead. Great set. I also have Tourney Custom Diamondbacks 1-SW that are one of my play sets. These are not pinned and have shorter, more modern hosels. i prefer them to the Nicklaus remakes, but both are reat playeers.

They have a full set of those that are the numbered collector editions with the display case at Pawleys Plantation which is in Pawleys Island SC. It is a Nicklaus designed course.
