GPS Golf Guru - Any thoughts on this?

Recommended Posts

I just got an email that a new version has been released

Yea...so did I. Lookin for a guinea pig to try it out and make sure everything's OK before I download it. Any takers? :)

JW

That is just the new Utility version that was released today, not an upgrade to any new software on the unit itself if you already have 1.18.

It would be nice if Golf Guru would post some sort of change log when they release a newer version of firmware for the unit.

Either post on the website or post in this forum with a link to the information. I found if very difficult to navigate to get the newer version and no information about what the update is supposed to do, fix or add to the functionality of the unit.

I really like the unit and have found the customer service is great. The accuracy is good and the last course they mapped for me only too a few days (in time for a tourney) and it had a number of added targets like water, carry water and bunker placements (including distances to the 100 yd and 150 yd point.

So, I am not complaining, just suggesting.

Hey Gang, after you download version 1.18 you will notice the time will be off an hour after you select your time zone (or at least EST is that way)... after sending an email to Golfguru the cure is to select another time zone that corresponds with local time... in other words, it will not automatically calculate Daylight Savings. When we change from Daylight Savings time, we will need to change the time zone again...

:)

I have mapped 2 18 hole courses with 1.18 beta version.

have been using the mapped courses for a couple of weeks and

had no problems with distances to tragets or greens.

havent tried to modify a green or add additional targets.

To to re-map a green and let me know if you have any success. I haven't had a problem adding new targets.

Regarding the Upro display, I had the brightness on high, and was trying to keep the display visible so I could compare it to the SG-5 during my round.

Sometimes the measurements were exactly the same, sometimes there was about 5-6 yards difference between the two units. I'll need to try a few more courses to render some sort of opinion. I do like the display on the SG-5 under all conditions better than the Guru, but that's to be expected due to the backlight and color screen.

I had a chance to do a side-by-side comparing the Guru (which I own) to Upro. While I like the concept of Upro and the distance to (measures to a particular spot) feature, the flyover view was very difficult to see outdoors. The screen shot Upro shows in their brochure can only be seen indoors....which defeats the purpose! :)

Guru was more accurate on the course I was at and Upro was up to 10 yards off. My guess it was an issue with the map they used and not a satellite reception.

Overall, if I could get a unit that clearly showed the fairway, had the distance to feature and offered mapping, I would be interested.

I just updated my utility. It asked if I wanted to update the guru to 1.18, and I said yes, but it did not do it. After watching the "sync" work for 5 minutes sending 6 months of scores to who know where (I have not signed up with ISAAC), I find that they have changed my courses around, and now I do not have info on several of them. Called them and they are in a meeting. If you haven't updated anything lately, I would hold off for a few more days. I thought I was safe by waiting a week, but apparently not.

I just bought a Golf Guru and received it today. When I installed the software, I was asked by the setup wizard whether or not I wanted to update to 1.18. I said no. Should I go ahead and update? I have read about some of the less desirable effects of updating, ie, being prevented from adding marks to a downloaded course.

I hope I am able to add marks, since I declined the update. Please let me know how to proceed.

There is a function on the Guru for setting a 'mark' which is used to determine the length of a shot, is this what you mean by 'mark'? If so, then yes you can still use the mark feature with 1.18.

No. I actually meant adding targets to an already mapped course. It is my understanding that, under version 1.18, you cannot add targets to a pre-mapped course. Maybe I am wrong, but that is what I took from the posts above.

The last time I brought up my Guru utility it ask me if I wanted to upgrade from 1.18 to 1.14. I thought that they were having issues with 1.18 so I went back to 1.14. Is there a way to go back to 1.18? I have reinstalled the new utility but it still states that 1.14 is the latest version.

2.0.1.4 is the latest version of the Utility. 1.18 is the latest software version on the Guru.

Log in, go to Update and click on Download Guru Utility. Give Amanda a call about your Guru software version.

Go to the web page, log onto your account and modify the setting in your profile. You can jump back and forth between whatever versions you want.

One caution, should you make a modification using 1.18, then go back to 1.14, you cannot read your modifications. The program is NOT backward compatible.

I have been able to add targets to 1.18, but not modify greens. One question that I still need to answer relates to the "999" error in reading Guru-mapped greens once any change is made to a downloaded file. That is, I'm not certain if the error comes up immediately after a course file is copied, or if it is caused when a target is added, or when an attempt is made to remap a green.

The only versions available in my profile are 1.11 and 1.14. My utility is 2.0.1.4 so I don't know why I can't get the software upgrade. I guess I need to make a call to Guru.

My profile shows three options, "Current" (which I assume would be 1.18), 1.11 and 1.14

I had that problem with 1.17 which I think was only used in beta. If I think of it, I will try this weekend with 1.18.

Let me know what you find out. I am going to take mine out to fiddle with it today for the first time. I am leaving on our annual trip next week and I don't want to do anything that will prevent me from using the guru.

I took the guru out at lunch and played 5 holes. It worked extremely well and I am very pleased with it. It confirmed my belief about the yardage markers on a couple of holes. I always thought that the first hole played much longer than the yardages showed and the guru confirmed that.

I did not try to add any targets today.

Well, after my rant, I guess I owe it to them to say they got the problem solved. Didn't take long once I got hold of Amanda. She said nobody had given her the message that I called. I didn't ask her if she didn't get my e-mail either. But, again, I am back up and running. The issue didn't have anything to do with the new systems, but a programming mistake had been made by the mappers, so that only one 9 of the the 3 I normally play would download. Other than this little episode, I have been very happy with my unit.

I just verified that using version 1.18 you cannot add individual targets to downloaded courses without corrupting the green distances. Add a target and watch the near/center/far green reading show something like 146/999/999!

I tried adding targets Friday using 1.18. Same result as you.
