Vintage Players, Do You Use a Vintage Golf Bag Also?

Recommended Posts

excellent thanks! you just nudged me enough to pull the trigger on one on eBay. Finally an appropriate bag to go with my '87 fluid feels and cleveland TC15's.

I actually wanted one of those red and white wilson nylon carry bags to go with the set, but I played 18 a while ago with a stovepipe bag and not having a stand was a mess, especially with the morning dew.

Most of my classics are Jones bags the oldest is my Cypress Point Jones carry although I do have a new Pacific Dunes cart Jones bag from the early 2000’s. I also have 3 Burton cart bags, one PGA of America and one Ryder Cup Belfry 2001. My brother gifted me for my 50th the best classic bag a MacKenzie with 3 head covers all custom order. Ping plush head covers are abundant with the Jones and Burton bags. I don’t have any big tour size bags in my collection thankfully.

I recently took delivery of this beauty and here seemed the ideal place to post some pics.

It's a very unusual John Letters bag, shown with a matching shoe bag I bought previously from anther ebay seller. I'm not sure if it might be a ladies bag or not but I don't care anyway, I love the look of it.

The shoe bag even has a little wooden John Letters brush and spike cleaner in it.

When will this lockdown end dammit, I want to get out on the course!

I like this thread! The difference between good with modern Sun Mountain

IMG_1473.jpeg.12a299ebf822676cf87c06cca4062dc6.jpegAnnoying using the bag backwards with club location and you gotta give me a break on the modern cart. Bag alone has to weigh 10lbs. Someday soon I’m gonna get a weight check on modern cart bag modern clubs and my heaviest vintage clubs in this Burton. I’m betting 50-60% heavier minimum.

@ezgoer interesting....I've used a pull cart, actually my Dad's from the early '60s....and it seems I've been putting the bags "backwards" when I use the cart . Then again, the bag was different from your Burton bag, smaller I think...along the lines of a couple/3 of RAM bags I picked up a number of weeks back, leather looking.

Also, I'm wondering if there is a difference between how a bag sits in a pull cart vs a push cart...hmmm

(btw, I changed the wheels from the narrow hard rubber wheel to the wider more modern wheel.

Just the club orientation is wrong the way I have it in the bag. With the shortest part of bag being away from carry strap (mine isn’t attached) pretty sure the shortest clubs should be where the woods are since these bags were designed to be carried. A 33 inch putter almost goes down in the bag this way. Guessing a 50’s SW probably would. Check out how the Sun Mountain angles lower towards putter well matching the length progression of the clubs. A designed power cart bag I believe. Now they brought out a specific pull cart bag that I’m not sure what the difference is other than a little less storage.

ahhh...it might be that my pull carts, I have my Dad's & a more modern one I bought last year - both just have 2 wheels, so when standing, the bag is upright.

And, thinking about it, I've always put my putter in w/the woods, not the wedges 🤣

Please excuse my ignorance, as I'm a 20-something that loves modern gear, but are the woods steel shafted? I orient my bag such that my iron heads will never accidentally smack the graphite shafts of my woods, but it appears the woods here are steel shafted?

Yes all steel shafts. I do the same as you with my moderns as much as possible. Never a short club near a graphite shaft and have nice long leather head covers on woods and hybrids. They are taken off for pictures but I’m actually religious about headcovers also. Matter of fact I’m one of those annoying iron cover guys. If you’re in the group behind me we will probably talk at least once per 9 as those fall off constantly. Not just woods but any clubs rattling together is akin to nails on a chalkboard to me. Not sure where I got this idiosyncrasy from.

I looked at my bag set up.....and I have my woods set up differently than what is shown here...if I was carring that bag, the strap would be over the handle & that is the side I put my woods - the high side, while the wedges would be on the "low" side.

So, is this how you'd put the clubs in if you  carried them or would you switch them around for the carry?

Yeah if I was to carry this monstrosity I’d have the woods nearest the strap/handle and wedges and putter on the short side. My modern carry is that way so everything dangles. Maybe I’ll try that set up on the push cart next time. Be really annoying reaching over the woods on a power cart but shouldn’t be any problem on the push.

I just picked up the biggest bag I've ever seen, probably quite close to your Burton....it's a Hogan red, white, blue leather & really large & heavy. Just for grins, I put 3 complete sets of Hogan irons in it...almost 30 clubs. What the flaming blazes did they need a bag that big for 14 clubs???
I'll get pics of it & the other's I picked up last month (guess June was my month for bags 🙃)

Not positive but I’d be surprised if it’s anything of high value. There’s just too many old bags you can get for very little out there. It would have to be something special. Some older big tour bags and every once in awhile you see an old hickory era bag that can command a bit. I do question if people actually pay the asking prices you see on those also. I’m no expert though, just my opinion, but I’m sure plenty others look at it the same way.
