Making golf easier: Single length vs hybrid irons

Definitely wish you the best for sure, but that has nothing to do with a one or two plane swing.  In a one plane swing (McIlroy) if you pause halfway down his downswing the shaft is tracking his right arm (its tucked right next to it).  Sergio too.  One planers track the shaft with their right arm all the way back down and through - the shaft is never following the right arm.  Two-planers simply have a steeper plane because they do the exact same thing, except with the left arm.  The left arm tracks the shaft back and down (Jason Day, Jimmy Walker, Mickelson, Justin Thomas) but the arms cross at impact at the right arm takes over the shaft in the following through.  In short, one planers don't square the face at all (because they never rotate the face in the backswing, they don't have to square it) and two-planers square the face by rolling their forearms.  But both are identical to what you want, just different.  Both have planes.  One (one-planer) tracks the line from the hosel to the hands and the other (two-planer) the line from the hosel to the shoulders.  SL would be identically helpful to both.  Both are still swinging on arcs.  One plays with the right arm and the other the left arm (then right arm in the follow-through).

Not being able to edit makes this site pretty broken again.

On line two, end of it, I obviously mean left arm.

But it’s the same concept. You come in steeper with a wedge than a long iron because you are closer to the ball. As you get further from the ball, the swing plane flattens. Single length removes that variable (on flat ground) entirely.

Not if you have a one-plane swing, which you say you want.  Since you are tracking the shaft plane line (the line formed by your clubhead and your belt) if you clubs are correctly built you do not flatten the swing plane through the bag.  It stays identical.  In a one plane swing the swing plane doesn't shift with posture (because you only care about the shaft line). In a two plane swing this is a correct statement, because two plane swings care about posture (the line you are tracking is the ball shoulder line and your shoulders will be in a different place).

I played SL couple of years ago, with some success, but ultimately found my swing speed not fast enough for the lower lofted heads and could never adjust to the longer wedges (too high and short). Which Cleveland hybrid irons, the Launcher HB or the Launcher UHX? If they were the HB, give the UHX a try. Hollow irons 4-7 and cavity back 8-D wedge. The ball gets up in the air very easily.

I just put the UHX into the bag and love them, even with the jacked lofts. My problem is gap between 5w and 5i. I hit the 5i the length I want, but low height. Thus the 4i really is not an option. I was looking for a 19° 3 hybrid, but I didn't get a long with my old one (the 5i is 23°, so a 22° 4h, while longer shaft, is too close in loft). I think I am going to try the Launcher HB irons in the 4i as a blend with the steel shaft. Both HB and UHX are same length and loft, the steel shaft will match up with the irons and the HB will help with getting the ball up. (or at least I hope).

I like the idea of going shorter steps between clubs, say 1 /4 to 3/8”.  I believe some custom fitters think this is the way to go.  I’ve also seen sets where the short irons are say 8-LW at 36” then the 5-7 are 37” and the long irons or hybrids are 38”.  I’ve always wanted to try a similar set.

I think I've always found the shorter the shaft, the easier the club is to control. I think mostly for this reason, longer wedges and short irons seem a bit counter-intuitive to me with the OL sets.

I couldn't see switching, personally.

I found that the longer length short irons are better for me as I am.mkre comfortable over the ball amd more relaxed.

Hitting different shots with a 37.5" PW or GW is not rocket surgery...if you've ever hit a knockdown with a 7 or 8 iron...doing it with a lonngsr length qdge is easy.

Like anything else, you have to practice.

I don't think OL is for everyone nor do I think  OL is "required" for all your irons/clubs.

If it works, helps you score, amd increases your enjoyment of the game...go for it.

If you wanted something super easy but not hybrids I would look at the Cleveland uhx.  I’ve got a 20 degree 4 iron and it is very easy to hit.  Going to a Cleveland launcher style club does make it a lot easier t9 hit the ball in the air and make solid contact.  It has really helped my wife and is something I would consider.
