What to put in the bag for a 7-10 handicap

First of all, everybody that is an 8 sometimes plays like a 10 and sometimes like a 4.  In fact, if your worst is like a 10, then you're doing pretty well!

Second, asking a question like this is going to get a bunch of responses in which guys tell you what THEY use, and that may or may not have anything whatsoever to do with you.  I think it is safe to say that in 2021 there are better options out there than a 3 iron, given that most OEM's don't make them anymore, but beyond that things become murky.

I would urge you, if you aren't already, to keep some data on yourself and your clubs to see what's going on, and the extent to which it might be contributing to your scores, good or bad.  You might have yardage gaps in your current setup, and you also might have clubs that are duplicating yardage.  Either of those might tell you what to do with the spot that would become available from putting the 3i in the hall closet.

I’ve been using arrchos to track rounds and some shot tracking at the range and with my old irons I had a ton of overlap with the more power lifted clubs but these seem to be much more balanced. As of now the 3i is very close to the 3h in distance just not consistency. I’ve seen quite a bit of advice now and am leaning towards maybe a 2h or just leaving it in the bad for weird circumstances because I don’t really have much of a tapping issue at the moment.

Just do some swing drills and play some rounds. Get warmed up again.

Then, by summer you should know what to do with the 3i.

Yes he will.  By summer he will have confirmed that the mb  3i is something he does not want to be hitting...

op- how do you hit the 4i?  For me it made a lot of sense to drop the 4i as well and add a 4 utility iron that has a lot more use in my game.  A mb 4i is a difficult club to hit for most of us, even though many on here prefer it.  Many pros like a little help with their long irons and go with more gi options, which might also be good for you (it has been good for me in the 5 iron).

It’s a 20 degree 3i. My hybrid is a 19 degree and just more reliable. I really just don’t use it because when I hit it well it’s the same distance as the hybrid but the success rate is significantly less. I only keep it in case I need a big fade or draw to get around something and honestly I’m better off not trying those haha

Got ya... my 3i is 21' and it's a go-to club for me.  I am still getting use to the new shafts too.  I am slowly becoming more comfortable with them.   The Best part I am smacking each iron further.  Before new shafts I was struggling with PX 5.5 to get 190yds.  New shafts I am hitting it nicely, and at times further than 190 and straight.  I am excited.  Dang do I love this game.

Whenever these types of questions come up for me I always think about the 24/38 rule. It’s old but I think it’s still valid. And when you consider creeping lofts it really doesn’t make sense for the average golfer (with an average swing speed) to play anything less than a 5 iron (used to be a 4 iron for me but I haven’t played one of those for a while)

I can crush a 4i right down the middle. The 3i starts to get a little wonky on me when I full swing at it. It’s not consistent either it could be a massive hook or a horrible slice no matter how I approach it.  If I hit it it’s great but that’s not common and  not when I have the 3h that I can hit high or low or even shape some how ever I need.
