Help!! Trip to pinehurst for husband

Hi! So my husband and I are planning a trip to NC April 15-18th (thurs to sunday). He really wants to play pinehurst #2 while we are there and is planning on calling 24 hrs in advance as we won’t be resort guests. I am wondering what his chances of getting a tee time as a single player would be for that Friday or saturday? My plan is, if chances are not good, to surprise him with a room and a for sure tee time. Thanks in advance for any advice :)

That is pretty much peak season for Pinehurst. As a single I would think your chances are decent. Being Friday and Saturday your chances might be a bit more difficult. With Covid still alive I think the demand might be a bit lower. That is a really tough call that only you can make...

Being a single definitely helps, and any other time of year (or if it were Mon-Thurs) the chances are probably 50-75% of him getting a spot. However, you're going during peak season and on the weekend so those odds drop.

The other thing to consider is that if he is lucky and gets a tee time it could be at 8 am, it could be at 11 am, or it could be at 1 pm. If you go the 24 hour route you'll have to be okay with not having any other pre-set plans on Friday or Saturday in the hopes that a tee time will become available.

What would be other perks to staying at the resort for him? Obviously the guaranteed tee time is huge. But if you’ve stayed there, is it worth the cost?

The thing about the Pinehurst Resort is that it is very golf specific. Yes they have the spa, the accommodations are upscale, and there are some nice restaurant/bar areas, but it's not really the type of resort where non-golfers are going to get as much enjoyment out of it.

I've only been once and it was for a very golf centric type of trip where we played multiple rounds on several courses over the span of 4 days. We did a stay and play deal that also included dinner each night and a few other golf related activities.

For your specific situation, the only big benefit would probably be the tee time. If he's just playing the one round most of the other perks (meals, unlimited use of practice facilities, shuttle service, fitness center access, etc.) aren't really going to be of much use.

I think for his situation the best option would be the bed and breakfast package. This would give him free breakfast with only an upcharge to play course number 2. The breakfast buffet is killer BTW! This will also give you a cheaper rate if you want to book another round of golf on one of the courses.

I think this is what I am going to do. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I can't speak for No. 2, but my experience booking No. 4 as a non-guest earlier this week (Feb. 24) might guide your decision. Calling at 8:30 a.m. the day before I wanted to play, there were only two tee times for a single: 8 a.m. or 1:20 p.m., which was the final group of the day.

Granted, No. 4 is pretty popular right now, but I was surprised it was that full on a weekday in February.

Also, I second the comment about the breakfast buffet at the Carolina Resort. It's amazing. Not sure how they have adjusted for COVID, but I'm sure it's still fantastic.

Good luck ... Pinehurst and entire the sandhills area is a special place for anyone who enjoys golf.
