Hip Turn in the backswing

Something I am interested in learning more about is how the hips turn and how the legs work in the backswing.

 

I have had lessons from an instructor who wants me to keep my hips “back” In the backswing.  My hips tend to move too much toward the target, and according to him, my trail leg straightens too much.  
 

I have found that when I try to maintain flex in my trail leg and get more “behind” the ball, that my low back feels a bit too much torque and tends to get sore.  No bueno.

 

I am interested in how my instructor’s preferred philosophy contrasts with other instructors like Shawn Clement and Monte, who seem to prefer a more centered pivot where the trail leg straightens out, and the hips seem to move toward the target more.  This is the Bryson/ Jack / Bubba look.  
 

Am I potentially misinterpreting what my instructor may be asking me to do?  Any pros and cons of both philosophies?  
 

Obviously I will be doing what it takes to make sure my back stays healthy, but I’m also interested in learning more about this concept in general.

Check out this thread about hips and early extension. Personally for me after watching this it's helped to focus on just one of the hips (left for me) and trusting that the opposite side will turn the correct way. YMMV

I like 'Brian Sparks' golf dance swing.  Legs and weight shift lead the way, and upper body and hips pretty much work in unison.  When done correctly, it's a nice, easy, effective and efficient swing.

The videos from athletic motion golf which I believe this is from is by far the best instructional series I’ve personally watched on YouTube.  Their videos about the hips and lower body are very helpful and they always try to explain the concepts for better understanding.

Reading John Redman’s Essentials of the Golf Swing. He states that the hips turn first and shoulders will follow. Advocates Percy Boomer’s turn in the barrel, though I think it’s mostly the barrel on the backswing. Redman was the teacher of Paul Azinger .
