MP20 MMC vs APEX 19

How goes it WRXers, wondering if you guys can help me out here.

I played the apex 19's in nippon modus 105 for a good amount of time and wanted something a little more thin, figure why not iron striking has been great lets shoot for more players irons.  So decided on the MP20 mmcs in the same nippon modus 105s.

Everything about them is great! love the feel love the look, don't like the distance.  Yes i know, I know... Apex 19 are players distance but they were only a 1.5 degree different in loft. So i decided to power loft the MMC 1 degree strong.  That brings all the irons with the exception of 9/pw to only .5 degree weaker than the apex 19.

Here is the problem. i'm not a long hitter but just average. with A19(APEX) i carry: 150|8 iron 165|7 iron 175|5 iron etc. MMC has brought 8 iron down to 135-140 ish 7 iron to 150-155 ish POWER LOFTED.

Is the apex just hotter? Because in my mind .5 degree weak shouldn't equal more than 2 yards of carry distance. I do want to note that the ball flight is definitely a lot higher with the MP20s. ball doesn't go as long but i hit my line/ target 8 out of 10 times but just 10-15 yards short.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks ahead for the input.

Hard to say unless you get on a launch monitor and measure launch, ballspeed and spin differences. Also will show whether the higher flight you are getting with the MMC is a good thing or the culprit in your loss of distance. Could very well be the issue. Apex is hot, but that is more about forgiveness across the face. Accounting for loft differences helps explain differences to a point, but won’t always be the full answer. You may be adding more loft at impact with the MMC, as one example, which can send the ball higher and shorter. You could be spinning the MMC too much, causing the ball to spin “up” and then die. Or you could be simply hitting the Apex more consistently.

The apex are a distance iron, the MMC is a players iron with a little bit of help. I would guess that the ball speed on the callaways is a bit higher, but I would also guess the spin is lower as well. Additionally would you say you are an excellent ball striker? The MMCs are going to be a bit less forgiving on misshits as well so you'll lose a little bit of distance as well.

I think the biggest factors are going to be ball speed and spin

It’s definitely the spin and if you get on a monitor, its going to show that.    The MMC’s were def one of the highest spinners in my testing as well and for us “avg” length players, its not a good fit, imo. I hit almost exact yardages as you do, based on your Apex stats, and i felt the MMC’s were too short as well.   You can def offset some of that spin with the right loft, ball, shaft, etc but you can also sell em and get something that has more “jump”.  Good luck

I played both of those irons.  Apex look good but felt hot and harder.  Very low spin.  Mizuno feels better but isn’t as forgiving.  I got fit for the Titleist t100s this year and feel like they are somewhat in the middle of these two with a lean towards the mizuno side obviously.  Small profile, easier to hit than mizuno, stronger lifts.  I understand completely what you are saying about the calllaway and Mizuno’s.  Best wishes in your choice.

Thanks for the replies guys sorry for the late reply on these, i didn't get notifications for some reason.

Definitely think the spin is the culprit. I would say that I'm an average ball striker going through some swing changes but having some timing issues with the change and notice that i'm adding some dynamic loft. I love the irons, and generally feel like i'm concentrating on the swing more.

Thanks again.

I think mentioned playing the Modus, right? I personally always felt the Modus spun a lot more for me than other shafts did.  I tried the 120s & x, they both seemed to float on me.   Sometimes the shaft & head combo just doesnt work for someone.  That MMC & Modus may just cause you to deliver more dynamic loft and spin.    I always did better with the Dynamic Gold stuff & also KBS C Tapers were great.   They have the “Lite” line that you might love.  Ya never know.
in terms of the ball, you can try the Titleist AVX.   It def lowers spin & that could help.
obviously swing changes to improve things but everyone knows that and we all have stuff to improve but lets be honest, we here to talk about the gear.  Haha

id change the golf ball and see what it does.  Then its the shafts.   DG 105 or 115 in a stiffer flex may help.  Or the KBS C Taper Lite line in 110/115 or ProjX in 5.0/5.5.    The project X were always good at lowering spin for me as well.    I even went to the Project X 6.0 LS line to improve spin control.    Just some thoughts.  Hope it helps

if not, sell em amd get into the Zx7s.   Haha. Great irons.

Thanks for that. I think I'll give a ball change a try and maybe some shaft demos at pgas. The last time however I went in after walking 7200yd course trying to hit balls was impossible. I think I "s" word every single... The tracer history looked like a dandelion half blown.

Crazy because I have the exact opposite results with the MMC.

I haven't tried the Apex,  but the MMC's are really long for me (1-1.5 club length) compared to my CB57 gamers.  They're only 2 degree stronger in most clubs, but the face has to be a lot hotter.

I'm planning on bending them weak because they're creating a massive gap in the back end of my bag.  I love how easy they are to hit though.

Both have $ taper shafts.

Just put some Apex Pro short irons in the bag and leave your Apex19 for 7 and up.

ive never found a Mizuno iron that wasn’t shorter than most everything with the exception of the JPX Forged or Hot Metal Pros. Maybe the HMBs.
