I'm starting to believe in the old push theory -- that a push is better for the swing to keep it on plane -- so I start the backswing with my hands/arms (left arm more dominant) and let my body react to the push with the turn; on the downswing, I push with a throw of the right hand (along with other sequencing).

As to the left elbow, if it is locked, it is not relaxed. Unlocked is relaxed. Relaxed is good.

yesterday at the range, i tried to feel that my left arm and hand is more dominant. this prevented my right arm from pushing the club upwards and over extension during the back swing.

during the downswing, i let my body unwind and feel as though my left side is being pulled towards the target. although i increased distance by about 10m, i felt some discomfort in my left wrist. it could be that i have been practicing too much, or that i am not used to this left arm takeaway feel. or could it be that this is a bad way to swing?

IF you are going to take the club back, take it back with your left hand and use the right as a guide.
I think that is what you were asking correct?

I feel I swing my best when it feels like everything is swinging back together, with nothing dominating the action. Hands, arms shoulders all swinging back in sync. Some great players will say they initiate the swing with a push from the lower body etc. or a kind of rebound from a forward press. Watch footage of Hogan Snead, Nicklaus etc. and you will see kind of a forward bump, and then everything moves back together. Harvey Penik described it as "swinging the bucket" which is a great image, IMHO.

This is something my current instructor has me doing. He's got me kicking the right knee forward with the forward press I already used to initiate the swing. From there I'm thinking "shoulder's, back to target, feet" I like to feel my shoulder turn is in control of the club going back and my arms are an extension of the shaft, my left foot triggers my right and I push off the right instep like a pitcher in baseball, everything else is just a chain reaction from there. I've been working on doing this with these swing thoughts for about a month now and it seems to be simplifying things and I've had some stellar range sessions. I feel it's the direction I want to be heading and will continue with it.
i don't feel that i take the club back with my arms at all. i start turning my whole upper body (or at least the shoulders) around my spine. as a result, my arms and hands move to the right and back, which takes the club back as well.
Word. I like to feel as if I rotate my upper body with my core (abs mainly) powering the movement. I've had a couple of instructors talk about the same feel...as if you're turning with your belly button.

The thing is though, it depends on which swing theory you're using. There are quite a few of them that seem to work pretty well, but a given thought won't work for them all.

Another recent one plane convert here. I pull my right elbow back at about a 45 and this drags the left across the chest and tight to it.

A comment above was correct, it depends on the particular swing theory you are following. None are right or wrong, just different.

Regardless, I do believe a key is to keep things "connected".

Even though I'm a Hardy One Planer (or attempting to be such), I've found that starting off by feeling that I'm pushing with the left arm actually gets everything going at once -- confirmed in a large mirror -- lol -- the effect is that the initial arm movement gets everything responding in a natural order -- and I don't take the club too far inside.

I may eventually change to where the right arm dominates more -- but the tendency for me is to pull the club too far inside with the right arm -- and I never recover.

Different strokes for different folks.

My shoulders... now that I think about it I don't have one dominating hand during my swing.

Left hand, but I am wierd. At address I can hold a perfect grip. When it comes take away, my left hand regrips strong and back I go. Im pretty consistent with it, but im teaching myself to hold my grip and take away with the right dominant, gets me on plane is more consistent. Its very difficult after 4 years of bad swinging!
