Cart and bag modifications

To me, a push cart is the ideal way to get around the course, and in search of the perfect push cart, I’ve amassed a fleet of them. All are mainstream, on everybody’s top ten list, etc., but… IMHO, they all have design flaws. Fortunately, some simple modifications to several of my push carts fixed the most glaring of these flaws:

 

Big Max Blade IP

For some reason, there is no support for the bag directly behind the top of it. Tension from the upper bungee, along with banging around the course, tends to force smaller diameter bags through the gap in the upper bag cradles. This squeezes the bag and constricts removal and replacement of some clubs. I fixed the problem with a section of aluminum threshold plate, cut to size and attached with zip ties.

This cart also came with a pendulum-swivel, small-diameter bottle holder, which is worthless in the heat of summer. It pops out, so I removed it and replaced it with a net I bought from Clicgear as a replacement part for a Clicgear 4 cart. It’s an almost perfect size. (I attached it with zip ties.) To me, a net in this location is the ideal place for my rangefinder.

 

 

Clicgear ROVIC RV1C

Same complaint: this cart does not support the upper part of the golf bag directly behind it. I found a ⅛-in. thick aluminum bar with the perfect width, and cut it to a length that would slip through slots behind the upper bag cradles, with enough extension for holes I drilled on either end. I put small carabiners in each of these holes, to prevent the bar from working its way out of the slots as I bang around the course. I also stuck a length of self-adhesive female Velcro to the bar, where it contacts the bag, to minimize possible rubbing damage. I remove one carabiner and slide the bar out before folding the cart. Unlike the Big Max, the ROVIC cart won’t completely fold with the bar in place.

 

 

Sun Mountain Speed Cart GX

At COVID’s peak, when there was no drinking water on the course, carrying enough water in the summer became a challenge for walkers. I attached a bungee cord to this cart, again with zip ties. The hooks support a large, insulated water jug, and they locate the jug directly above the cart’s rear-wheel axle line. (I can separate the hooks and carry two jugs side by side.) In this location, the weight of the jug—a gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb—does not affect the cart’s balance and handling.

 

 

 

Big Max DRI LITE Hybrid golf bag

 

When I use a carry bag or “hybrid” bag on a push cart, I prefer bags with quick-release straps, so they’re not in the way. I converted the straps on my Big Max bag into quick-release straps by looping the ends through stainless-steel, fixed-loop snaps.

I recently made an additional modification to my Rovic RV1C cart: I added a mesh bag from a Sun Mountain Speed Cart GX. It fits the Rovic perfectly. The bag is available from Sun Mountain as an accessory item, for $30.
