Might be a dumb question, but my 7i snapped and needs reshafted. I have a spare shaft but it's the 3i shaft.

Instead of buying one, can this be simply cut down and used for the 7i? Or does that change too many characteristics of the shaft.

Can it be done?  Yes.

Will it end up the same as the original shaft?  No.  Not if you just butt cut to the new length.

Iron shaft vary in stiffness to account for the changes in head weight.  A 3i head is a lot lighter than a 7i head (due to being played at different lengths).   So the 3i shaft is weaker than the 7i shaft and will play softer.

It also may be lighter depending on the particular shaft model

Now, for some parallel tip shaft models - that come as single length blanks - they could be tip trimmed to make them the same as the 7i shaft.   (and then butt trim if there is any other difference in length that needs to be adjusted).    But taper tip shafts generally can not be tip trimmed to make that adjustment so it comes down to the particular model shaft you have.

This is a DG S300 flighted shaft.

Do you mean the "DG Pro" shafts?   If so, I think they only came in taper tip so you wouldn't be able to tip trim to make it work like a 7i shaft.

Find the tip trim chart for the shaft, tip trim the difference between what's recommended for the 3i and 7i, then butt trim to the finished length. This assumes a parallel tip section shaft and head.

Most do, but not all parallel tip shafts come in single lengths that can be tip trimmed - so need to know more than just the tip size.   Also, very unlikely if it really is a flighted set of shafts.

True, you need to know the length of the parallel tip section, but that should be on the shaft technical information sheet. If it doesn't list the parallel section length it should list the maximum tip trim.

Actually, it's easier than that.  Just see if they are sold as single length blanks or discrete length shafts.   Single length and you can tip trim.   Discrete lengths for each iron and they were designed to be butt trim only.

This is the first time I've ever heard about a DG flighted shaft.  Got a photo of the shaft label?

Regarding a regular DG taper tip shaft, there is NO parallel tip section.  The tip quickly flares to larger than .370" a couple of inches above the shaft tip.  I cut down a DG 4 iron shaft one time and put it into a wedge which I bored out because it wouldn't fit into the hosel otherwise.   BTW, the club played fine, bastxxx shaft and all.

Your shafts is either 0.370 parallel, or 0.355 taper tip, and we dont even need a caliper to figure that out, since the length of each step is different.

The parallel version (who can be tip trimmed) has steps thats 1.88" inch long
The taper tip version (who cant be tipped since its taper all the way to first step) has steps thats 1.75" inch long.

If its the Parallel version with 1.88" long steps, your spare #3 shaft should be tip trimmed 2.0" inches to become a #7 iron shaft.
