Turning a "normal" putter into a counter-balanced putter?

KingKong

Recommended Posts

I want to take a normal putter (Odyssey Ten series or Triple Track, haven't decided). I want it to be 38". I know I'd need heavier head weights which can be done, but how much heavier? Is it just a guess and test type thing? Has anyone done this before?

Thanks!

A counterweight goes in the grip, not on the head.

Adding length makes the club feel significantly heavier.

I understand. Maybe I didn't explain correctly. I want one like an Odyssey Tank style. So the tank putters are normal head weight and the weight is only in the grip?

"Available in four different models — #1 Wide, #7, 330M and V-Line — and two different lengths (35 and 38 inches). Each Tank Cruiser putter comes with a weight kit that offers three different head weights and counterbalance weights. Stock 15-inch SuperStroke Mid Slim 2.0 grip is a nice touch."

@KingKong An Odyssey Tank putter is approx 400 grams head weight, with a counterbalance weight at the butt/ grip end (I play mine at 35”, with additional ~60grams of lead weights on the head, for an even heavier feel... “your mileage may vary” ie it’s very personal what might work for you!)

see if these previous forum discussions = helpful thoughts on various counter-balance putter specs?

So you're saying it IS as simple as adding length, getting counter core grip and getting weights?

You need heavier weights. Adding length will increase the swingweight, but most CB putters have a heavier headweight to offset the weight in the butt end of the grip. Tanks are around 400g headweight.

 “+1” re @benthegolfer’s observations.

@KingKongYou might like to try the Gravity Grip (with a ~70 grams steel rod running along the entire grip, as their version of a counterbalance/

superstroke “XL” longer grips...

or even the JumboMax JumboFlat 17” grip that Bryson uses(?)

___
some example details, from the ~2013 odyssey tank putter (this Link also has a comparison vs the Taylormade Daddy Long Legs putter setup)

https://www.golfwrx.com/80113/odyssey-tank-putter-editor-review/

extract/ Quote:

The 34- and 36-inch putters have the same 400-gram putter head as the longer versions, but use different grips, shafts and counter weights to achieve the “tour” balance point of Odyssey’s standard-length putters.

The 34-inch model has a 130-gram shaft, while the 36-inch model has a 137-gram shaft. They also feature a standard-weight grip (about 63 grams) which conceals the 40-gram counter weight that gives the putters their traditional feel. The 38-inch model has a 151-gram shaft, while the 40-inch model has a 161-gram shaft, with grips that weigh about 111 grams and conceal a 30-gram counter weight.

This is all great info. My aim is to use the SuperStroke XL with a counter core weight. Idk that I can find head weights that heavy, so maybe I go 50g in the grip instead of the usual 75g and it should all work on in the end, no?

So you could just buy a used Tank or Tank Cruiser, which would probably be a good idea. Or if your heart is set on a Ten there would be some work involved. The Ten is 365g, so you would need some heavier weights for the head if you wanted it nearer 400g. Also the shaft would need replacing, you could remove and sell the Stroke Lab add a KBS CT Tour double bend/straight (depending on Ten model) in brushed black, cut to 38" and then use the grip of your choice. I would recommend, from personal experimentation, the Winn 15" (like Victor Hovland) with no counter weight in the butt. That would be a lovely counterbalanced set-up.

Whatever works, unless it's hideous.

The shaft doesn't need to be replaced, SS counter core weights fit just fine in stroke lab shafts.

I'm not sure whether he could get a Ten custom ordered at 38" though with a Stroke Lab. And, if not, whether he would want to remove the existing grip and counter weight and then extend a 35" putter 3 inches.

Whatever works, unless it's hideous.

“+1”. With some luck & patience, you could find an Odyssey Tank at 38” for fairly cheap & minimal extra effort to modify?

eg this example from ebay

Too late...already purchased a 2Ball Ten w/ White Hot insert and had it extended to 38". It'll be here tomorrow, and the grip will be here then too. I did go with counter core, and will get heavier weights. If it works well, then great. If not, oh well. I'll cut it back down and sell it. I have $250 in it so I'm not too deep.

Not wanting to go off topic, but I love the look of Hovland’s DS72 pld. But not being able to buy one, I was wondering if buying a 2021 ds72, getting it an inch longer than normal (so 35 rather than my normal 34), and then putting on a Winn 15” grip, would achieve a counterbalance feel???

would that work?

DS72 is 360 grams so the head is a little lighter, for example the Odyssey Works Tanks were 380g (OG Tanks 400g) with just a heavier grip (no counter weight in the butt). You could add lead tape to the sole or just try it with a Winn 15" but I would go with 36" length.

That’s awesome info thanks. I had an o works tank (the 1w) which I loved for a long time and should’ve kept!

If you play 34" I would go 36" long with the heavier longer grip.  I believe his putter is 360 grams with a heavier weight belly putter shaft in it.
