New pull draw

Recommended Posts

So I made some swing changes to add a bit more rotation. Previously, I had a gentle push draw that stayed relatively close to midline (to the right), but as my rotation increased, it turned into a small pull draw. Every time I try to push it back out, my contact goes to shambles. It's not a terrible miss, maybe around 15 feet offline to the left, but just not what I want. Of note, I've not seen my swing on the course (only on the monitors at pgass). Any advice would be appreciated.

Athletic  swing with some issues

1st still impact

Unlike the vast majority of golfers , your pelvis is too open at impact with your right foot almost on its toe.  This in turn results in your right elbow being too far behind your right hip at impact.
Cure your right foot issue and your other issues will also get better

Place a sand wedge underneath your trail heel-2nd still

With the SW in place swing to the top stop and then swing down . Then make a regular swing without stopping at the top.

1st video

Your eventual goal is NOT to keep your trail  foot flat on the ground , but to MINIMIZE the amount that you lift your trail heel off of the ground

Thanks a bunch. Was trying to copy the Justin Thomas sequence, which is why I was trying to get my pelvis to come around faster. I guess I will slow down the turn a bit and keep the heel down longer.

Look at Justin Thomas at impact

Even though his right  foot position at impact is probably two standard deviations greater than your tour averages , it is still far less than yours is currently .
Trying to get your right foot to a similar position to his is your goal .

The dangerous part about trying to copy someone else's motion is the tons of small other elements/compensations/physiology that goes into it. I agree with Golfarb in that you have too much of a good thing going on. Your hips are extremely fast which warrants finding the right matchup in terms of club position and backswing length. I remember your videos from last year in scrubs with the smiley face hiding your TRUE IDENTITY (😅) and back then you had a lot of great things going on but were a bit unbalanced and "loose" for lack of a better way of putting it. Those were driver swings mind you, but overall your current motion looks cleaner. You'll probably need to work on a matchup for those super fast hips though, either slowing them down/not firing them so quickly or shortening your backswing a tick to give your hands a shorter path to getting into the position golfarb mentioned above.

Haha you were super helpful last year. Yeah, was definitely overly cautious about posting online, but it's honestly too much effort and likely no one cares.

I figured making changes just for the sake of emulating the pros wouldn't work out terribly well.. I have intentionally been trying to turn the hips faster, but I'm assuming I turned the dial a bit too far.

Just for the sake of discussion (and I realize I shouldn't just try to cut and paste his swing), but I looked at a few other videos out there of his swing, and found a decent amount of height variation on the back foot. Two examples here.

Not arguing with your point because, ultimately, I think keeping the back foot down would be helpful for the majority of golfers. My question is, does it matter as much as we think given that JT seems to do just fine?  This is with the understanding that I'm raising mine more than he is (and I'm nowhere near as talented as he is), so I know I gotta make some tweaks.

Driver swings involve wider stances , more lateral movement  in the downswing,  the ball played more forward ; all of these factors contribute to a much higher probability that the heel of the trail foot will be  higher off of the ground at impact  than with an iron . Even so, JTs trail foot position with his driver does not compare to your trail foot position with an iron . Your foot is slightly more on its toe but twisted so much that  the bottom of your shoe is far more visible .

does  not compare to your trail foot position with an iron

Sorry to revive an old thread, I took both your advice and made a concerted effort to fix my swing. My iron swing has improved, still cant keep my back foot completely planted, but it's a bit better than it used to me. I'm taking the club back a bit less inward which has fixed my bad pull draw for the most part.

What I have broken now is my driver swing. I've slowed it down a bit because I realized I was lashing at it wildly, so my contact is better, but after finally filming it formally, I'm finding that I'm doing a weird pelvic thrust at the ball after contact. Any idea how to fix this?
