OK, so I put the voodoo on what you do, sorry 🤣 but now’s an opportunity to drill thru a matching end with the 303 and a nice satin finish.

or not……….

well I can’t just have one hole on one end can I hahahaha

it’s killing my OCD side, think the w80cu20 rod has found it’s first project once it arrives

An excellent machinist probably Wouldn’t have put a brain fart hole all the way through lol. Is what it is my mind was preoccupied with trying to fix the failing DRO scales (both failed so that’s great lol)

I might try a brush look or sand blast finish to this. Done the polish on the first one keen to try some other things

I could get to 360, I don’t normally

play a head weight that high but it’s very much doable

the accidental hole might be a happy accident, I’ve been thinking of ideas on how to fix it and my thoughts are to drill another on the toe, get the final weight after I face mill and use the two holes to add a touch more weight to dial a perfect 350 in. It’s still not ideal in my mind but it should salvage it

Yep I was thinking on the same line as you were on fixing the mess up. Heck everyone messes up and most of us learn from screw ups.

Well in good news I was able to scavenge the slide off the lathe I’ve been wanting to replace anyways (not long enough) to fix the y axis and pulled the x axis apart to find a loose solder connection. So the DRO’s are back up and running and I can move on with face milling! I’ve already got this pattern done pretty excited for it. I really want to retain the ping man and ping logos on the side, so I’ve set the fly cutter to 52mm and will do a y axis pass on it

Here’s the test pass on a very large piece of 6061 I paid a lot of money (well a lot for 6061)for years ago, never used for anything and now test face mill patterns on…. Excuse the depth of cut I didn’t bother to square this very well because I just wanted to see what it looked like

Forgive me for my lack of machining knowledge, but could you not drill the holes with just a normal drill press?

Yah you 100% can, but all drill bits are pointed so you will end up taking out additional material. Also a 3/8th bit will drill a hole tolerance wise that is bigger that .375” where as an end mill bit will give you more precision. It all adds up so using a drill bit only would remove a few extra grams of material and make the head lighter

I still use a drill bit to get my depth set, end mill bits don’t love plunge cutting so it’s best to limit the material they have to plunge cut

I mean end of the day I do it this way because I want to and i can. Not that I have too.

although if you wanted to go bigger and not drill though the putter completely (say I went 20mm single weights each side) they you’d really have to use something like a boring bar or end mill because the length of the tip to full width of a 20mm drill bit is huge

Well I couldn’t be bother waiting for the tungsten copper rod to come in some grab a stick of bronze and turned out a filler plug for the accidental hole.

set the weights, did the full blending linish (still needs the final hand sanding) and final weight has come down to 348 grams, which I’m pretty happy with.

think I might try black oxide on it for the final finish.

Really interested in seeing the black. Maybe even a lighter color like the “Oyster”  finish Ping is using would keep the highlights and make the face milling pop.

Well waiting on tungsten still. Moving away from the pine wood derby weights, even tho they’re really cheap, just too constrained on size with them.

but I did pickup a couple new projects today for the tungsten!

lefty anser, this one I’m excited for, think my removable weights idea is gonna work. 3/4” tungsten rod on the way should be able to do a single removable weight on each end, so can change head weights for green speeds. It’s for my father in law for Australian Father’s Day (yah totally threw me off when I first moved here) here’s hoping he actually likes it

pal 2 in stainless 🤷‍♂️. Need to pull the head and weigh it first, feels decently heavy on its own. Might end up selling this one after I’m done, I didn’t really intend on buying it but got a good enough price on it.

I also got a TPM9 coming

You might end up waiting awhile for the results now @Motoboss I got invited to play a local club I haven’t been able to play yet so I’m prolly just gonna throw a quick polish on it, glue it back on the shaft and make it the gamer lol

but the pal 2’s 80w20cu showed up today so I drew up the design for this one (old school hand milling calls for old school hand drawn on graphing paper) mainly cuz I wanna buy more tungsten and the wife is getting upset so this one needs to get done to sell and feed the project list.

For something a bit different, gonna slot them in the face this time. Also the pals are quite a bit narrower and I was having a hard time stacking the weights on the sole and balancing them (toe has so much extra area compared to the heel)

350g is locked in tho, gonna try an offset fly mill on this should be fun, stay tuned for this weekend when I actually work on it lol

I was surprised measuring it was only 8mm longer then the anser 4. So it’s not really that longer, I think it’s the combo of narrower and longer that makes it visually look heaps longer than the Ansers.

the pal 6 now that’s a long boi

also I don’t blame you for stealing the shaft, they’re super cool stepless I really like them.

Throw a “good enough for the girls I date” polish on the a4 and whacked the shaft on and a new Ping grip

I forgot how much I hate polishing stainless, especially this 400 series. I don’t think I’ll do another stainless with these smaller weights or if I did I wouldn’t linish it, I’d chamfer the edges of the pockets and face the weights on the lathe and just leave them recessed a bit. Def not going to linish the pal 2, prolly won’t chamfer the inserts tho because I am going to face mill it after I put the inserts in the face and want a flush finish.

gonna try and get some practice holes in wed afternoon now that we’ve had some sunshine and the courses are open again, might paint fill  the pingman and logo before that

im actually really digging the rusted shaft too it’s got such fun character

Been waiting on tungsten for awhile finally showed up today.

but I did fire up the lathe last weekend to make the prototype. Now to test out how good my carbide tooling is…. This post may age poorly depending on results hah, gotta turn this rod of tungsten into two weights

unfortunately won’t get to it this weekend so I’ll leave you all waiting for the results

That is absolutely sweet. I think your on the right track with adjustable weighting. I like the design as well as it looks like a plug of lighter (aluminum), heavier or even plastic could be very easily used. Does the slug just have a hole drilled through it with the counter sunk screw?

Whatcha going to do for the face, milled or plain?
