RIP Vin Scully

94 years well lived!  67 years calling Dodger games. As a boy I hung on every pitch from Koufax and Drysdale listening to Vin's call on radio. I went with my dad and uncles to a doubleheader at the Coliseum shortly before the move to Chavez Ravine.   At Dodger Stadium, people brought their transistor radios to listen to his call because it was just that good. I once got a paper airplane from the upper cheap seats all the way onto the field and didn't get kicked out.  He will be missed.

They called Mel Torme the Velvett Fog, but for me it was Vin and his silky smooth delivery that made so many calls in baseball and golf memorable.  Too bad I didn't get to hear him more often than calling the NL playoffs.😕

Like Scotee I grew up listening to Vinny; as Jerry Doggett called him as a tossed the mic back.

For a guy who made his living talking, his best ability(which is saying a ton), was knowing when not to talk.  Game 6 of 86 World Series, "here comes Knight and the Mets win it!", and then silence for a good 5 minutes.  He just lets the scene do the talking.  Same with Gibson's home run posted.  Unlike today's announcers who would need to make sure their voice is all over any video of plays such as that.

 

And when he did talk....  look up his radio call of the 9th inning when Dennis Martinez through a perfect game against the Dodgers.  Just poetry.

 

I know it was a movie, but I am pretty certain they just told Scully to do what he does in 'For Love of the Game", but it is so Scully when he say, talking about the last game of the season,  saying they want Chapel to "push the sun back up into the sky, and give us one more day of summer."

I'll bet Eckersley is still trying to figure out how Gibson kept that inside pitch fair... 😉
