Putting Clarification

We think it is better suited for a connectedarms to chest core rotation stroke. Any use of hands or wrists is exaggerated by the counter weight.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these. So cool to be able to pick your brain. Very much appreciated! Will keep the questions coming if that’s ok ☺️

Piggybacking off of the question above, I've started to pull my elbows to my torso in my putting stroke.  I've found that this has led to me hitting most putts short.

1. Do you think I should keep putting this way?

2.  Any suggestions on how I should explore getting the right speed?  I'm trying adding a bit more pop to my stroke as well as lengthening either or both of the backswing and through swing.

I did the aiming test a few months ago and it showed I should have the ball outside my eye line.  I had already been playing the ball outside the line for a few years based on similar testing and experimentation.  I have missed many 3 to 4 foot putts to the left.  Even the occasional 2 footer.  Recently I was trying a Lucas Glover style long putter, with the ball under my eyes.  I noticed how much easier it was to see the line, and was not missing short putts to the left.  At first I figured it was just the whole long putter thing helping me.  But I was bending over about the same as my regular style.

So I decided to try my normal putter, actually a more upright one I have, with the ball under the eyes.  Same results, I can see the line on short putts.  I suppose it's entirely possible that I see the line differently at mid distances than short ones.   And I wear glasses while putting so that's another variable.  Anyway I'm staying with the way that lets me see the line on shorter putts, for the foreseeable future.

Do you like to see the arms connected to the body? Presumably lengthening of the arms during the stroke leads to in consistency?

Hi GB Not necessarily depends on length of arms realtive to height. If you have a long wingspan there is a tendency to get jammed up.

I like to play the ball back in my stance towards my right eye and under my sternum. Which leads to left aim bias. Is the only way to offset this to have eyeline more inside the ball?

The goal is to find where you see it best. That will take some work and experimentation. Keep an open mind and try every option.

If you are leaving them short what is the benefit of the change. Better start line? If you stay connected the key is to not look for speed with a hit or using your hands. You have to rotate faster.

When you did the vision test was the reference line under the ball or to the side? I see people test with an alignment rod on the top side of the ball. This skews the results.

@bargolf I have a quick question, but a little background first. I am a fitter from years gone by. Currently 60 yrs old and playing the best golf of my life. From studying clubs for years, I have come to the conclusion that grip orientation can play a big role in putting accuracy as the putter grip is the only one that can have a flat area.

I always liked using the flat side of the grip for my top hand thumb, but I have a somewhat strong top hand position and a grip with the flat part perpendicular to the face was uncomfortable in my hands. I had a difficult time with consistent hand position which wreaked havoc with my putting. I found that by installing the grip with the flat portion where my thumb wanted to be allowed me to be MUCH more comfortable and make a much more repetitive stroke. Over the years, I have tweaked the orientation as I have found the best position for my hands. Of course, if someone picks up my putter they think something is terribly wrong with it. I then explain and show them how it works for me and they sometimes still walk away shaking their head. But I think many would benefit from trying it. Anyway, I welcome your thoughts on this.

From having worked with Bruce,   I believe your answer is covered here:  https://brucerearick.substack.com/p/learning-to-putt-lesson-18

A key fitting protocol is to ensure that what feels square in your hands also looks square on the ground. They must match. That is one of many reasons we recommend using a round grip, with no reminder. Much easier to match what feels square to what you see as square

YES! I actually experimented with round grips when I started this, but decided to go back to one with a flat side, just install it so that the flat side was right for me. It's kind of comical when someone picks up my putter. The look on their face is priceless when they see the grip aligned about 30° to the right!

Hello-You would be surprised how many tour pros have done this over their career. It was part of the reason for the "plain is shape" clause in the rules. I am more a fan of round as it becomes easier to find the correct orientation of the hands.

AND, avoids the need for precise grip alignment.

Thanks!

Bruce,   With your new findings associated with the biomechanical area how does this affect sources of motion.  On the last podcast I listened to, you mentioned that an Utley arms/no shoulders type stoke would be difficult for someone with shorter arms.  Are you finding that specific measurements like arm length and post type influence the source of motion?

Hi CNosil Arm length/height drives the posture. Posture dictates the souce options.
