Any members at Mesa CC or Moon Valley CC?

Hi all,

I relocated from San Diego to Scottsdale during COVID and have enjoyed exploring many of the public tracks in greater Phoenix. I’ve had my eyes on a private membership ever since landing in AZ. I grew up playing Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe GC and have always preferred a more “old school” feel than the typical desert layout.

From what I’ve read online, Mesa and Moon Valley are at the top of my list. I wanted to compare my notes with anyone who has first-hand experience at these clubs.

In case it’s helpful, I carry a low single digit handicap and am in my late 20s. I’m not worried about the social aspect of a club, more so the golf experience. If anyone is a member at Mesa/Moon Valley and is willing to host a WRXer for 18, I’d be happy to cover the guest fee and tab at the 19th.

Appreciate any input in advance!

I had a membership at Mesa CC....it's nice but I grew tired of the course pretty quickly as a lot of holes are right to left or best played right to left. The driving range is small for sure but they do have a pretty good short game area with a separate area for wedge practice which I liked.  I do have to say though that the members as a whole are very friendly and the club as a whole has a more casual feel which I liked.

I was looking between Mesa CC and Alta Mesa CC because I like the idea of Parkland golfing too. I didn’t think about Moon Valley because I live in the East Valley and wanted to be close. I would highly recommend Moon Valley. Mesa CC is about to do a 10k assessment and be closed for a year and has a wait list for junior memberships. Moon Valley has junior memberships, unlimited cart usage included (huge in the summer) and probably won’t be closed for a year so kinda a no brainer imho. I’ve played moon Valley too and had no issues with the layout, but definitely test drive before you buy.

While I’m at I just wanted to make a shameless plug for Alta Mesa, it’s a great little track that while not as parkland as I may like, is good enough where it’s really not a desert track. Also we have unlimited cart usage (again huge for summer play), junior memberships and are solely a golf club which means it’s all about golf which sounds like might be a positive for you. Biggest down side is we jumped up in price to 25k initiation, but the waiting list has opened up because of that. Good luck in your decision, welcome to az, Ranch Santa Fe GC sounds awesome, I’ve played Pauma Valley and feel nothing can beat high quality so cal golf, but life is easier here for sure, cheers!

I looked at Alta mesa when I moved to Gilbert from Tempe, I hated all the outside tournaments, it being closed on Mondays, and that you couldn’t tee off until after 7 o’clock

Its open on Monday's for 9-10 months of the year (open in winter), I would say there really aren't that many outside tournaments, not being able to play right at sunrise bothered me at first but then I re-learned I don't like getting up early. But yeah if you want to play golf at the crack of dawn they normally don't send first group off until an hour after sunrise, do that to limit noise for the neighborhood and let the guys work in the daylight a little getting it set up

Talking my my buddy who’s a Mesa member, the assessment was added and the course is getting a total revamp/redesigning some holes, and the new initiation will be $60-70k

Course could definitely use an update. Needs new range and holes around it are funky. The holes around the ridge are fun. I don’t get the 60k initiation but they’ll probably get it.

Moon Valley CC is going up for sale as a portfolio deal. CBIGG is the current corp owner and they are package selling the 20 clubs they own. Got an email last week that they are expecting a sale to close by end of September.

should be a good thing long term, but can almost guarantee an initiation increase and dues increase will be coming next year. If anyone is on the fence you should jump now. Last I heard there were 3-5 memberships left.

No club is perfect at this price tier but for ~ $8000/year it doesn’t get any better in Phx/Scottsdale area.

Initiation is not 60-70k, it’s at 32k with assessment included for equity member + stock purchase 1k. “Should” be shut down from April 24- November. All new irrigation and greens with a couple new locations. New turf that doesn’t need over seeding. With new water restrictions a lot more courses could be doing this. Best to email club and find out correct pricing, info & tour. club is ran by a board which is hit or miss- lately a miss. Range is on smaller side with plans later to redo at later date

if true they’re smoking some really good stuff. That’s getting up there with really good clubs. We’ll see, you never know with inflation or popularity of golf how far prices can go. Kind of sad actually

The only good thing about these club initiations going up is us equity guys are making money golfing, now I know how the pros feel!

Speaking of that, at Mesa when you leave you get Zero back no matter what membership you are. Only thing you might get back is your purchased stock certificate only if club is at capacity- never heard it being at capacity in its existence .  So yea dropping 30-60k on initiation and another 1k or so on certificate and you’ll  get nothing back 🤭

So the "equity" you get is the opportunity to pay assessments and annual dues. Not exactly "equity":

eq·ui·ty

noun

1. the quality of being fair and impartial

2. the value of the shares issued by a company
