Having qualified for an invitational (like in the FedEx playoffs) is totally different from making a cut from a full 156-man field.

You miss the point I’m afraid and my semantics have confused you as you missed the meaning of my use of “ relative nobodies “. I’ll end it there thanks.

The World Ranking Point argument isn't even an argument.

Whatever elements were thrown into the algorithm, it's churning out the wrong answer.

A 150 man PGA Tour field, even missing big names is still super difficult to win. Especially compared to a 50 man DP Tour field...of which you could argue the vast majority would probably be at best a 1 in 150 chance of winning that corresponding PGA Tour event.

There's obviously a balance if the 50 man field is stacked full of top ranked players...but as has been said, the formula is based on data...not gut feel.

Took five years to come up with the algorithm....I'll take that over your emotional gut feeling.

Evidently over the winner of the event's, too.

And, seemingly, Keith Pelley, a member of the OWGR Board; who said:

'There is no doubt that Jon Rahm's conversation and some of the other noticeable changes around OWGR will be a topic at our next board meeting.

'It is prudent to bring it up based on our top players and their comments.

'The OWGR is a hot topic for many reasons. There were four universities that did a detailed study and all came to the conclusion that the world rankings didn't necessarily reflect the game of golf.

'As a result we implemented a new system. And like with any new system you evaluate it and modify it if changes are needed.'

Especially over the three time winner of this 50 man event.

Remember, this is the same guy that thought the Spanish open win was history making and the biggest win of his career.

Do you have the full analysis of the Spanish Open?

I’ve a dim memory of the 3rd win matching that of Seve thus making the win special. Likely you know better of course.

He's Spanish and it put him on the same number of trophies in his national Open as Seve, so it probably meant almost as much to him as someone from Atlanta finishing 35th in the fighting pit that was last week's RSM Classic. Not even beating McIlroy down the stretch with Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood in the mix in the Tour's flagship event would top that. I doubt many watched the action from Dubai, though. They'd have been glued to the TV watching Adam Svensson, Joel Dahmen and 150 other guys duke it out in the week's marquee event.

Agreed....but my point is that Jon Rahms mouth is motivated by his emotions.....

I’m a reasonably dim retired business statistician who has tried to make some sense of the OGWR logic. I must have spent c 30 minutes upon it over the years.

In business it’s not always possible to dig out enough data to apply statistical models but there is in golf. So the model is the sole issue. Interesting that a number of universities have applied research. Thanks to that poster.

The weighting applied to scores over time interests me and I believe the last 13 weeks’ results are more heavily weighted than the balance of those of the last two years.

One oddity ( IMO ) thrown up was that Lee Westwood declined to play one week as his form was such that he would have fallen down the rankings due to his anticipated result being way less than the result which would have been removed. This doesn’t work for me. It may have been that he would have been unable to enter the Masters or other vital event as a result.

On JR, he’s bad points, you’re right but Woods, DJ and others spat in public, Hatton is foul-mouthed so they fail to match up to the Watsons, Palmers, Nicklaus, Trevinos and Players for me. Thank you.
