Chat gpt

I’ve been using chat gpt just to test it out and I have watched several YouTube videos about what others think of the technology.

Seems like AI will be similar technology for my daughter (6) as the smart phone was for me (44). For years now, everyone been told to teach their kids how to code but AI can write the code itself so do people just need to learn how use AI similar to how we learned to use TI83 calculators instead of doing the long form math equations?

What are your thoughts in general of chat gpt?

Rogan and Bret Weinstein had a good convo on this. Essentially why will people need to learn anything anymore , and how difficult will be to measure who actually knows things and who doesn't. Essentially this technology could write all our books, do all our thinking etc....You could never be sure any idea is coming from a person. (well it would have had to at one point , considering how the AI works, scouring everything in existence for predictive logic as to next words etc)

It's really weird. I'm not that old (41)....but i look at some things and i'm like "Well, this can't be good"

We probably don't have any idea how much evil this could also be used for at this point, along with the good

When the radio was invented, people theorized that it would revolutionize education. It failed to do so.

Every new technology seems to foster a sense of revolution. The producers of the technology want you to believe it. The hype machine will ensure the messages get out. Every time we hear: "Things will never be the same." But, time and time again, these prognosticators are proven wrong.

I don't see AI being much different.

As a former college level English and writing teacher, I can tell you that AI writing is easy to spot. Looks good, but it always just rehashes existing arguments. Weak thinking. Weak compositional skills.

Even a student who creates something like AI writing organically is going to earn a "C" at best.

To circumvent it, all you need to do is have a student write something in front of you. Pretty easy to tell if they have the skills or not.

So, I just add this crap to a long list of nonsense that I have to look out for when grading papers.

So what I’m hearing is. If I have AI write all my papers, I’ll get Cs!

Yes, indeed. Having your parents call the school to complain also helps. The longer I taught, the more a "C" became the lowest grade I could give.

The "C" is equivalent to patting a young person on the head and praying that they don't cause too much damage in the world.

It's easy to see where that mentality has led us.

Reminds me of this. I live in an area where a “cheap” house is 1 million. The local high schools are filled w/kids with parents that all seem to have a team of lawyers on the speed dial. I know a few teachers and coaches at these schools and they say it’s almost impossible to do their jobs. Any discipline, bad grade or “not playing enough” and you can expect a phone call and a threat. And the schools side w/the parents!  Most just end up quitting or just giving in. Ridiculous and sad.

Can't say this surprises me much. "Meritocracy" in action.

But, it does keep Tufts University (and analogs like UCSB) in business. Day care for affluent young adults.

The more I think about it…the more it seems to be dangerous just for the fact that when you do a regular internet search you get many different opinions and options that you can sift through to potentially get your answer. Being that we have been accustomed to half of the results being essentially ads, you generally just didn’t accept the first website or two’s opinion alone. With chatgpt I don’t see people doing the extra work to find a different view point if it comes up with a reasonably sounding answer.

That's very frustrating for me to hear because I had to work for my C's!

And in my day being good at football was just as important as having wealthy parents lol. I got into Queens!

Yeah man, me too! The "C" I got in "Intro to Chemistry" during my sophomore year in college remains a very proud moment. Why I signed up for that class is beyond me...oh wait, I needed a science with a lab and "Rocks for Jocks" didn't have any seats left.

Oh well, I graduated both high school and undergraduate with solid C averages. Did well in classes I liked and not so well in classes that I didn't.

Overall, I feel like I've turned out fine.

I wanted to say "punter" first as well, then had to correct myself. Weird.

Pretty much how I got into it. When I played cornerback/safety in high school I offered to kick the field goals as a former soccer player. Eventually colleges told me I was way better at kicking than playing safety lol

The punter from my nephews HS team (he was also QB1) is now the Minnesota Viking’s punter and makes $710k a year… So there is that. He was such a bad QB they swore he did bad on purpose so he could showcase his punting! Lol

The year I came out I was the top ranked kicking prospect in Canada, #2 was a guy named Jon Ryan.

You can Google search him. 15M+ in career earnings
