I did set out a few years ago to qualify for the US Open via the USGA local qualifier to be followed, of course, by the regional qualifier. Where I live your GHIN handicap index doesn't kick in again until March.  At the time I was 2.3 but needed to get down to a 1.4 to get into the qualifier. About the worst time of the year with wetness, winds and chilly weather to improve your handicap. Didn't get there and possibly won't again due to the torn tendons in my elbow. I have my moments but the consistency doesn't seem to be there anymore. And I won't even bring up the torn meniscus, though I swear it doesn't affect my swing.

Ah, but the scorecard doesn't know how butt ugly your clubs or your club shafts are. However, I do understand how looks could possibly mess with your confidence.

... Better man than me then. 💪  I keep hanging back on my right foot because my body doesn't wanna put any stress on my left knee. Like you, at this point it shouldn't affect my swing anymore but evidently my body still needs some convincing. Only certain movements cause me any discomfort as it is really no longer openly painful. Life of an ex competitive athlete with a torn labrum/tendonitis, 2 back surgeries and this meniscus nonsense and I don't even know how it happened.

If you can get both, take it.  But when testing out new clubs performance, for me, comes first. I once took a beautiful Titleist iron, a beautiful Mizuno iron, and a butt ugly Callaway iron to the range. Dammit if the Callaway didn't win the battle.

I know the soreness. I had a mild meniscus tear in my right knee. I got it walking down a fairly steep slope coming off a green in Vegas. I had arthroscopic surgery and was pain free and playing again in three weeks. I'm sure I wouldn't heal the same now though.

... 3 weeks is excellent! Thats the real eye opener though ain't it? After age 50 or so you can't play through the pain as it will only get worse. At age 71 I have to be very mindful of any injuries because favoring my left knee can cause problems in other places. 🙄 Thankfully Rehab took care of my left knee meniscus tear but it took about 2 months to feel like I could swing freely again. I only fall back when I'm trying to hit a big drive and the AF doesn't like that swing anyway.

Does anyone here do anything like that?  I don't do any of those traveling tournaments because I am simply not good enough.  I did get invited to a pro-am over in OR that is both a team event and an individual event.  It's a 50+ pro am, 54 hole tourney, but I have no thoughts of winning it.  The team plays two days and the standings are finalized.  During these two days is also sort of a seeding for the final day.  The top-50% get to play in an individual tournament (don't know if it's flighted) and the lower 50% get to play in a net skins game on the other course.  I do have secret hopes of getting into the top half, but that is about as far as my golf aspirations go. 

 

 

I wish I had the game to at least attempt to qualify for something like the US Senior Open, thought it would be a good experience.  
 

After my doctor visit yesterday I just hope I can find a way to keep walking while playing, I just dislike riding in a cart.  That’s my new golf goal, hopefully playing better more consistently too.

... If healthy enough can you walk during the summer? Once it gets above 100* here for good and usually 105-115* from June - September I have to take a cart. 🥵  Like you, I much prefer walking.

About 2 weeks ago, I was playing and my foot started to hurt, nothing bad, but when I got home I had a bruise on my foot.  I played several rounds, but my foot wasn’t responding.  Yesterday I found out I tore the Posterior Tibial Tendon.  Surgery isn’t an option at this point, but I need to find the right brace or orthotic, plus PT.  Fingers crossed 1 of the options works

But the rule is swapped with any other player outside of the top 7 or top 10 ? what was it again ? When is the deadline to swap? Before the start of the second round? Sorry I don't remember any of the details.

Bout time I posted this up. May 7th I played the Adaptive Open qualifier at Broadmoor in Indianapolis. 
 

If for some odd reason I lived in Indy, I’d join there in a minute. Great course. Donald Ross, all right there for you. No stupid holes, no surprises, just a great test of golf. Compact footprint and its Indiana so it’s flat and walkable. Greens all slope back to front. Miss long or above the hole at your peril.  Rough was thick and juicy. Weather was hot garbage.
 

I had a tee time just after 9a, and my ball found the 18th green at 8:35 PM after two LONG lightning delays. That is a long grind and damn hard to keep your head in it for that long. Play was suspended again for good on Tuesday for severe lightning and a nearby tornado 😧 so I was not able to putt out and finish. 
 

6,400 yards, competitive pressure, bad weather, USGA, and adaptive golf mean a game that’s hard got REALLY FREAKING HARD.

 

I’m not proud of how I played. 52-54 makes 106. I did not finish last. For an idea of difficulty, my fellow competitor was a +3, played pretty well with a couple terrible breaks…..and shot 83. It was a tough day. One slot available to qualify and I think 73 got in, which is flat out ballin’ in those conditions with one arm. 
 

I have a lot of work to do. It was still a great experience and I can’t wait to enter next year. 
 

Anyone who says “if you aren’t going to qualify why are you entering” does not get it. It’s about feeling that juice again on the first tee, seeing how you respond, and getting better. Much better barometer than your GHIN.

... Haha of course you would know that! 👍  My sons girlfriend in college lived in Montana on a ranch and thought all wolves should be killed. I showed her a video like this one and it was an eye opener for her. The eco systems are so dependent on a symbiotic relationship with so many species that only Man tries to destroy. F the economy that wants to drill for oil and gas on federal land and destroy the eco system. Man sucks.
