Removing towel fibers from iron neck!

Hi all!

 

I did a rookie mistake a few days ago. It started with using a MAP torch instead of my usual blue bottle while pulling some heads. While pulling, I grabbed a towel to wipe some

residue off the iron hosel. Normally while using the blue propane bottles I can wipe and no problem but I guess the MAP burns way hotter and the towel basically remained on the hosel lol. See pic for residue that has been impossible to take off. This is also a custom finished head so don’t want to scrape with a blade because I tried it briefly and it definitely scratches.

 

Any advice on how to remove? I was thinking acetone as next step.

I think you're on the right track with acetone.  Maybe try an area on the back of the hosel if you're concerned about marring the finish.  In the future, stay away from microfiber and stick with an old cotton or paper towel- something that'll scorch or burn instead of melt.

Definitely acetone.  Based on what it looks like, it seems like acetone would take care of it.

This. Acetone will work and shouldn't affect any finishes. It will eat into paint fill though.

Try putting that head in the freezer for about 30min, then use a scotch brite pad(non scratch type) on it.

Goof-off or Goo-Gone might do the trick if Acetone doesnt.  You basically have melted plastic n the hosel

If you’re concerned about abrasives or chemicals altering the current finish, I would get the torch back out and burn it off. At the very least, it’s going to free up the debris and make removal easier without damaging the club head.

Heat the hosel and this time don't use something that can melt, to wipe it off.  Then use acetone to wipe off the residue (wait until it cools a little).

That's what I would probably do.

All of the above will work. The towel was obviously a poly compound (plastic) and simply melted on there. Acetone will dissolve it slowly. Burning is okay as long as you don't blue it. Finally, throw those things in the trash and get COTTON towels. They will actually dry things when you wipe with them.

Brake cleaner will remove that without altering finish. Just use in a well ventilated area.
