Anybody done the GAP Member Play days?

The Golf Association of Philadelphia runs a “member play day” series where you get a chance to play some really top notch courses. I’ve been trying to talk some buddies into giving 1 of these a go for the last couple years but no dice so far. Anybody done any of them? How was the experience if so? Thanks!

I played in a lot of them in the mid-late 2010s. 100% absolutely worth it. I played in as many as I could get into. Gave me many opportunities to get on courses that I otherwise had no access to, even as a member of a different club in the GAP area. They don't cram in too many players, and you don't even have to bother keeping score if you don't feel like it. I always just signed up as a single, it seemed like the majority of people did it that way, you don't need to put a group of buddies together.

Got the email from them, thanks! There are a few on the list that certainly have my interest this year, and it looks like a few of my buddies have come around on the idea of giving one or 2 a shot. Will take your advice and won’t be worried about doing a few solo, but its still nice to play a top notch course with the boys!

I do Huntingdon Valley every yr and few others- they are great (even though the price went up this year)  and if you do well you win money to the proshop.

Yes, highly recommend the ridge. But if you want a spot you have to book right when it opens.

The Ridge is great, but not as good as it used to be 5+ years ago

Any of you played Bala or 1912? Looking at either of those, Ledgerock and French Creek. Not sure if I’ll be able to get on Manufacturers and there was some sort of issue last year and they are giving priority to people from 2022’s sign up.

Don't waste your time at Bala.  1912 Club is nice.

My brother was a member at 1912. Played it once and won’t go back. It’s just eh

I wouldn't bother driving from Harrisburg for Bala unless you are a completist who wants to try everything once. It's a short William Flynn course that's like 5,300 from the tips, a couple of interesting holes but otherwise meh in my opinion. I played it back in 2016 or so. 

 

1912 is a decent parkland layout (William Flynn again) but nothing particularly memorable or great. I played it probably 10 years ago back when it was called Plymouth CC and was having some money troubles. It was overtreed at the time but I have heard they took a lot of them out since then under the current ownership.

 

I'd do Ledgerock and/or French Creek over those two.
