Spirit Airlines Lost Clubs

Recommended Posts

Hello golfwrxers,

looking for advice, brother in law lost his clubs when traveling with spirit airlines. Their policy is they’ll reimburse with proof of purchase. Any one else have this issue with any other airlines? Did you find they actually reimbursed you for the cost of clubs? Any other advice is appreciated.

I had my clubs stolen from Orlando Airport probably 20+ years ago. Initially I had some pushback from Delta that they only were responsible for $500. However, once I supplied them with receipts they paid me replacement value.

I had somebody tell me recently that domestic airlines are responsible for $3500 if they lose your clubs.  Tell your BIL to do some digging.

Edit to add:  Using google, I found...

How Much Will Airlines Pay For Lost Golf Clubs?

Domestic flights between U.S. destinations subject to the Warsaw Convention may be reimbursed up to $3,500, while international flights may be reimbursed up to $640 per bag. If your airline loses your golf clubs, don’t be too concerned.

I'm not sure what the Warsaw Convention stuff is all about, but your BIL should do some research.

Wow! I did ask my rental insurer if my clubs were covered when I traveled and they said yes. This incident will definitely make me want to keep all my receipts for clubs and also convince me to never fly spirit with golf clubs.

I’ve travelled a lot with my clubs, and only had this happen once. It was actually a theft ring that were just  walking into baggage claim and grabbing golf bags then walking out with them. They eventually caught the guys and now you can’t do that, but my clubs were long gone by then.

This really is the chief takeaway...  Watching a crew member fly back on my AA flight was really hilarious.  I mean, if you guys won't deadhead on your own airline either...

I'm sorry for your loss.  That must truly suck.

Could be a blessing in disguise. The clubs he lost were fairly old, used m5 driver and a spider putter were maybe the newest clubs in the bag. Luckily I have some receipts for clubs that he might be able to claim were the ones lost and get a larger reimbursement.

if someone wanted to cut me a check for the amount i spent on my clubs, i’d be thrilled.

id replace everything via the bst/ebay, upgrade my irons, and probably put $1000 in my pocket.

Do not proceed. That could get you a knock on the door if the real clubs turn up.

Get an Air Tag/Smart Tag and hide it in your golf bag.  Allows you to track your bag.  I (almost) always know where my bag is during time spent in the airport, and I'm always checking.

I'm a frequent flyer, taking between 25 and 50 flights each year. I use 5 airlines, one of which is Spirit. They are much better than their reputation. My experience, having flown Spirt more than a dozen times last year, is that they have very nice cabin crews, clean aircraft, are almost always on time, and haven't lost any of my luggage. The fares are low.  Although they don't have many amenities, I've always found them to be a good value. Any airline can loose golf clubs or luggage. I doubt Spirit has a worse record in that regard than most others.
