Governors Club golf course chapel hill

I’m headed there this summer for the first time to visit family. Will play with family member who belongs to the club. Curious on thoughts on the course from anyone who has played it. I see there are three nines. Would be interested to hear preferences and pros/cons of each 9.

Also, other courses in the area I should try to play while I’m there?

The 3 9's are aptly named. Mountains will really make you feel like you're in the mountains even though you are hours away from the NC mountains. From a couple of the holes you have really long views - that's kind of neat and rare for the area. However, if you don't like mountain golf and elevation change you won't like it. Foothills is the most difficult IMO and kind of reminds you of a standard Nicklaus course. It's long, difficult, not a lot of bailout or options going into the greens IIRC. Lakes has some nice water features. Personally I think I'd skip the Mountains 9 if I were only playing 18, but it's really a personal choice - I don't think that one 9 is objectively the worst or best.

It's a nice place. Always in good condition, nice facilities. I've been out there about 5 times, never seen it crowded.

Thanks for this assessment. I actually really enjoy mountain/hilly golf as I came up in the game playing hilly courses in Northern California. Fortunately, I’m staying with family who is a member and lives in the community so I will likely get to play all three 9s at least once. I’m hoping to get in 3 rounds of time permits.

I played the mountain 9 and Lakes last week an had previously had played foothills and Lakes.  I loved the Mountain 9, there are definitely some holes where course knowledge will help you out, lots of great elevation changes that make it fun, but very very playable.  Lakes is much less visually interesting, but both par 3s are over water, and overall a great mix of holes.

In general the course is in great shape, the facilities and everyone I've ever encountered there are fantastic.  Grabbing a post round drink and watching people come in on Lakes #9 is a good way to spend a little time.

Thanks. Excited to check out all three nines after what you all have said about the course. Trip isn’t until early July and I imagine it will be hot, so hoping to do early morning rounds.

I played the Governor’s Club courses this week. Played Foothills and Lakes on Monday, then played Mountain Nine separately. Greens were punched on Mountain nine. Other than that, really gorgeous and interesting course overall in fantastic condition. Non punched greens rolled very true. I’d describe the course as challenging but fair overall. I found the mountain nine to be the easiest and foothills to be the hardest. Mountain had interesting topography, and a few holes that really reward you with major speed slot downhill of you hit tee shot in right place. Really great courses overall.
