My own road trip Myrtle Beach

Recommended Posts

Where to play? Eat? Shop? Ect?
Hey all, our high school golf team is going to Myrtle Beach on March 19th for a golf tournament. We are going to get there a few days early to play some practice rounds and what not. For all of you that have been or live in the area, what are the best "bang for your buck" courses, or courses that I just shouldnt miss playing? I also want to do a little shopping, any cool places to go? I want to see if there are any places to pick up some J. Lindeberg duds as well. I looked and saw that the closest store is a couple hours away so thats out of the question. Would the PGA superstore have and JL gear? I was sorta planning on going there anyway. Finally what are some good places to get something to eat? Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks and peace.

Play True Blue. IMO one of the most spectacular layouts on the entire Grand Strand area.

check out www.fishclub.com

Other favorites.

Caladonia Fish Club (across the st from True Blue)

Barefoot Fazio, or Love course

Glen Dornoch is a great

Tidewater.

Those are some of my favorites

I know Martins is a huger retailer down there, they have 50 of everything.

Enjoy your trip.

Great list Freddiec! I'd add The Heritage to that list. All those suggestions might be a tad pricey for a high school student though. For under $100 you can play any of the Legends courses or Prestwick, all decent tracks. I'd hold out making a decision until you get into Myrtle Beach though, you can usually find some great deals in the paper or through your hotel/resort.

Regretfuly you might find many deals this time of year as the beginning of March starts the season in Myrtle so most all the courses charge full price , if you are looking for sugesstions for courses , depending on your budget you might consider Tidewater , Dunes Club , Caledonia, Heritage Club , Wild Wing Avocet, Kings North course at Myrtle Beach National , True Blue , as one of the posters said the Legends complex is good also , as for the golf shops the 2 biggest are Martin's and Golf Dimensions , the last time i was in there they did not have JL clothing but that could have changed

All the courses listed are great. The PGA Superstore does not carry J. Lindeberg. They might have a few visors but other than that nothing.

Just curious, what tournament are you playing?

Firstly thanks for the replies so far guys. As for the tournament, Im not exactly sure yet. Ill get back to you on that one.

I just spent a week in Myrtle Beach (2/3-2/10) and played the following courses:

True Blue

Caledonia

Pawley's Plantation

Tidewater

Thistle

Grand Dunes

Glen Dornoch

My top three would be: True Blue, Caledonia and Grand Dunes; Glen Dornoch is a very underrated course. Stay away from Tidewater...it was in horrible condition, which is a shame because I have heard many good things about it.

Another vote for Caledonia and True Blue...so many good holes. One, if not both of these courses is part of my groups package every year. The rocking chairs on the Caledonia clubhouse patio is a great place to watch your buddies put shots in the drink or hit the clubhouse on their approach shots into 18 green! The Dunes Club gets high rankings, but the only time we played there the conditions were ok at best, however it was a good test of golf on a cool windy day from the tips. I've got some rainchecks, so we're giving it another try this year. Barefoot Fazio is great (best at Barefoot by far in my opinion), the Dye was pretty decent, the Love was good, but I think a little overrated. I enjoyed Tigers Eye...the greens were very fast and in great shape. Planning on trying its sister course Leopards Chase this year. Oyster Bay was fun...one side has a lot more water, lotta fun holes. Long Bay Club was a pleasant surprise...good value if I remember correctly.

I'm glad to hear some votes for Glen Dornoch and Grande Dunes...we added those and will be playing there next week...I CANNOT waith to get out of New England and play some golf!

You won't find any JL stuff down there, but there is a Puma Outlet at the Outlets in the middle of Myrtle Beach.

As for courses, Thistle is the best bang for the buck and is always in immaculate shape. If you really want to play a "not to miss" course, drive a little further up from North Myrtle Beach and play River's Edge in Shallotte, NC. It is about 30 minutes above Myrtle and is the best of any course you will play down there.

Glen Dornoch is a great track. The last 3 finishing holes are some of the toughest you will ever play. Stay away from Heather Glen across the street though. It is a worthless links style course.

As for the top contenders if you are willing to shell out the cash: Legends, Grand Dunes, Caledonia and the Barefoot Resort courses (Norman or Love). Stay away from TPC Myrtle Beach unless you like shelling out $200 to be completely underwhelmed.

Hope this helps.
