Trail hip depth on backswing?

Hi friends,

 

Somewhat newer golfer (~3 years) but an absolute range rat (3-4x a week) and I’ve been loving the challenge and pursuit of learning the golf swing. As such, I’ve constantly been tinkering and sometimes misapplying concepts or over-doing them to the detriment of my swing, but in a way, I always learn something from them. 

 

My most recent mishap (at least I think it is?) is how the trail hip works in the backswing. The idea of “coiling” and loading up in the backswing has led me to really push back my trail hip. I’ve heard you have to push it back and up in the backswing, but when I look at my swing, it looks absurdly so. I also failed to realize that it’s also pushing my butt back past the buttline and causing my head to dip, so I have to rise instead of lower during my follow thru, so I guess I’m not maximizing power?

When I realized my butt and head were dipping so much, I went and got a lesson. He agreed and we basically worked on getting my wrists hinged and pausing at P2 while keeping my hips and head “still” and then turning to the top maintaining hinge and loading into pelvis  without butt and head moving. 

 

Here is April 15, about 2 weeks after lesson. Still some dipping but not as much. I think getting my arms not so across my chest via hinge played a part in the change.

Here is the drill I’ve been grinding post-lesson.

 

 

As you can see from the full swing prior, still decent amount of dipping, but when doing the drill, my head is much more stable, but my hip seems to be still way too far back? But it really feels like I can’t make a full turn to the top without my hip sucking back like that. 

 

When I look at pro swings, their trail hip at the top of the backswing looks like its barely moved from set-up, especially compared to mine!

What am I missing here? Is it a flexibility issue, because I’ve always assumed I was pretty flexible and I have a rather large shoulder turn. Or am I just misunderstanding how the trail hip loads? Also, I have a feeling that having my hip so deep in my backswing is making it harder for me to get my weight on lead side and takes longer to clear my hips? Having too much weight on trailside has always been my natural tendency. Please hit me with all the theory and nerdy stuff, I’m here to not just improve my own swing but learn the golf swing in general! Thanks!

The drill is fine but you still do a reroute of the arms after you conplete the backswing, like you dont trust where they ended up. This gets your arms even more stuck behind your torso than they already are. You are also still very bent over in the backswing. 

 

I would work on quiteing the body and especially the legs. Work on short backswings where you lift the club. You gotta work on a shorter backswing, a more upright posture, and using your arms to find the slot.

 

A good drill would be the 9to3 or look into monte's no turn-cast drill. Monte teaches the good grip and armpath create the body movements you want. You dont need to be trying to tilt or shift your weight. A proper path and rotation will do that. I would even br skeptical you have weight on your trail side.
