Swing & ball striking -vs- Shot making

Recommended Posts

20-handicaper here...

My range sessions are more on swing correction and ball striking rather than shot making.  Should there be an focused evolution from swing/strike to shot making?  I seemed to be so focused on striking the ball, and kinda hoping the ball hits my target window.  Should more focus be put on shot making, thinking it would naturally improve my ball striking?

  Thank you for your time!!!

As a 20 cap, your focus should be on making solid contact with the ball, not shot making.  After you gain consistency and your handicap drops, then focus on the other details.

Shot making is a low single digit and better type of thing.  Everyone that does threaten to shoot par or better occasionally should just try and hit it solid as often as possible.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

If you have enough smash there are some things you can do to affect both a little bit at the same time even while working on whatever your session structure is, with a goal of having it bleed into your overall understanding and execution.

Grab a 5 iron and punch balls low and hot on a line with progressive carry distances out to your maximum trying to keep the flight low as possible.   This is a strike and shot demand.  No rules, just do it.

Gotta learn to make contact first. Only shot making you should be practicing at this point is escape shots and short game. Majority of of practice should be on ball striking

I think the general advice here makes sense: learn how to hit the ball solidly first.

But...what kind of shot are you trying to hit?  What kind of shot can you hit?

I think golf is ALL shotmaking.  Every single shot.  A "stock" wedge is still a specific shot that you're trying to hit and that you have to learn how to hit consistently.

I think every golfer should practice shotmaking under pressure as often as they can.

I think this advice is awesome.  You have to learn how to translate the shot you want to hit into a shot that you know how to hit.   Figuring out how to execute a specific shot is absolutely necessary for good golf.

So I say, yes, practice shotmaking.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
