Best distance ball for slow swing speed?

Dill Pickleson

get a medicine ball, not sure how old your dad is, so get one based on his age/strength. There's no magic golf ball that will add distance, he'll get way more distance by throwing the medicine ball against a wall. I'm 57, and thanks to speed training and doing things like medicine ball throws have made me longer than ever, I regularly hit drives 320 plus.

Driver: PING G425 LST/Callaway Epic Speed LS
3 wood: Taylormade mini 300
2 Hybrid Callaway Maverick

4 Hybrid Taylormade Superfast

5-UW: Ping i210
Maltby TSW sand wedge

Odyssey OG 2 Ball stroke lab
Titleist ProV1 left dash/Snell MTB-X/Vice Pro Plus

Off subject here, but I’m 55 and coming back from shoulder injury and loss of strength. I’ve looked for golf specific workout routines or exercises but they seem all over the place. Besides the medicine ball throw, are the any other exercises that have helped you gain distance back?

TaylorMade Sim Max 9* @ 7* Fujikura Ventus Blue TR 5 Reg
Ping G425 3wd @ Flat setting Fujikura Ventus Blue TR 5 Reg
Ping G425 7wd @ -1 Flat setting Fujikura Ventus Blue TR 6 Reg
Ping G425 22 hybrid @ Flat setting Fujikura Ventus Blue HB 6 reg
PXG Gen 4 0311XP 6-GW Fujikura Axiom 75 R2

Cleveland CBX Zipcore 50*, 56*, 60* DG Spinner Stiff stepped soft
Evnroll ER7  33” Rosemark grip

Resistance band punches using your hips and core, Olympic lifts(start with light dumb bells), plyometrics and speed training using both heavy and light sticks are just some of the golf specific exercises I have my clients do.  Do static or dynamic stretches afterwards.  I do them myself as well.

According to Golf Channel, you average longer than those your age on Champions Tour. Must be a hell of a swing.

yes, I'm a lot bigger than those guys, I'm 6'6" and around 225. I was going to try and do super senior long drive competition this year, but they got rid of the super senior division, and just have seniors at 45 and up. I may still give it a try if my knee ever fully recovers from an injury and surgery last year. Now, hitting it straight is a whole other subject!

I played today for the first time in a few months, so I kept the driver in the bag. I was matched up with a threesome who were a few years older than me. They asked right away on the first tee why I'm not using driver, and I said I'll hit it through the fairway, and they kind of chuckled. I roped a 3 hybrid to about 260 with the roll out, and drove it through the dogleg into the rough. I did that multiple times today with the hybrid, and hit a few with my Mini Driver around 280 or so, and they all laughed at the end of the round and said they can see why I don't hit my driver much.

Doing a lot of the Dr. Kwon swing drills (look him up on Youtube) have really helped increase my swing speed, and for me, swinging the orange whip really fast after my medicine ball training helped a lot. Also look what Phizzy said, I'm a gym rat, and do a lot of lifting that just generally helps stay strong, and stretching to keep limber and your swing arc long and full helps.

This is warming up with the driver before the round, 297 is the carry, in case you thought I was fibbing.

Any recommendations, driver goes about 150, looking for extra distance for my dad.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program-

The three aspects that you want to optimize with any ball are trajectory, spin, and ball speed. Obviously, the slower the swing speed, the lower all three will be. The thing that’s easiest to “loose” is spin, since spin=drag=loss of distance. Particularly with the non-driver long clubs as well, most slower swing speed players struggle to achieve adequate height to optimize carry.

Balls that help in those area might include

Supersoft - a classic choice. He should use this as a metric to compare against others.

QST - higher ball speeds than most at this compression.

2019 TP5x or current model ChromeSoft X LS - two balls that support the “higher compression is better for everyone “ idea.

how do you "loosen" spin?
