The pulling putts saga continues

The OP has an arm stroke and doesn't load and unload (release) the putter head very well. He probably has the same tendencies in his golf swing.

Appreciate the response. I do struggle these tendencies in the full swing! So how would I feel the load and unload of the putter head without it being all arms?

You have to get more of the hands and wrists involved to putt like zitlow is suggesting.

It's pretty well documented that using less hands is the more consistent way to achieve a better stroke.

Zitlow's method isn't necessarily wrong, but it's not the better way to consistently deliver the face.

Would feeling like the butt end of the putter pointing at my belly button at full times is a good feel?

It can be. Ultimately, it's about what will deliver the face consistently. The thought of the butt pointing to your belly button can lead to an overactive right hand and early release.

You want the hands to be very slightly ahead of the ball at impact. Worrying about where the butt is pointed is minutiae. Focus on bigger movements. The most consistent strokes are generated by control of the stroke somewhere between the shoulder blades and the forearms. The lead wrist should generally be locked, not releasing.

Find videos of tiger's stroke. He was a release putter but his motion was still arms. Releasing the putter is more about letting the toe overtake the heel through impact... Not using the hands and wrists as levers...

Feel ain't real, so maybe that's a feel that would help, but generally… that would be a very "wristy" stroke.

For me I set up on my left side about 60/40 or 55/45 and use a dorsal flexion of my right hand to get the putter head started and my arm swings the putter back like I'm going to toss a ball. I feel a little movement in my body which just goes with the flow.

The putter head wants to swing down on it's on volition but I help it a little bit if it's a longer putt. The key is to let my right wrist unfold through the ball. The ball gets a nice roll without me having to do a lot of work.

This is a good illustration @bladehunter posted. He releases the putter head as the bend comes out of his right wrist through the ball.

Takes about 15-20 minutes of practice on the putting green and you'll have it.

In other words… the butt of the club moves. It's not the pivot point.

IMO, many avenues to better putting. One fundamental notion must be 'consistency'; every time the same.  The same thought, the same action.  If not, then variation will bring misses you won't accept as your fault.

I've improved lately:

.big flat putter and straight back while standing v upright

..eyes never waver from ball (justin rose)

...putt to a mark forward (jack nicklaus)

....always seek to hit the thumbtack on the back of the ball (willie park, jr)

.....toes turned in to lock hips

......use 'pop' stroke for longer distance putts (padraig harrington)

.......left hand forever flat and in-line with shaft (lee trevino)

........tension free delivery.

All of which take continual effort in order to make it so 'everytime the same'.
