1941 "Ryder Cup"

I wasn't real sure where to put this but this sub-forum seems as appropriate as anything.

 

Not sure how many of you facebook and of those that do who follows the page "Ben Hogan," but that page does a "this day in history" and is typically Ben Hogan related accomplishments.  Today the post was about the 1941 Ryder Cup that was held on August 23 and 24 in 1941.  Because it fell during WWII, the British side was unable to travel to the US to take part so there were two US teams competing and raising money for the USO.  Bobby Jones was captain for one side and Walter Hagen the other.

 

What really struck me was there was a picture posted of the program for the event of the "autographs" page.  You will have to search it out as I don't know how to get it over to here but it had nearly everyone or maybe everyone in the event, Hogan, Vic Ghezzi, Nelson, Snead, Sarazen, Hagen, Ken Venturi, Jug McSpaden, ...

I just googled "1941 Ryder Cup" and came up with this wonderful documentary of the Detroit Golf Club, where that "Warrior's Ryder Cup" was played:

Can you imagine playing golf in a dress shirt and tie?  Attire alone has probably lowered scores.

I was thinking that very thing as I watched it 🥵

and remember back in the 19th century, women (when they were allowed to play) dressed in long bustled skirts & high button shoes....and some still managed to ourscore some of men, which got them barred from playing in some clubs (& early PGA)

Outstanding video.  I've done a fair bit of poking around Utube for just such gems and that one eluded me.  Thanks for posting it.

Yes, absolutely.

Standard dress for UK hickory events, and for a laugh when I'm playing regular monthly medals with persimmon and blades gear.

It doesn't make a practical scrap of difference.

Also then there's the shoes.

thanks, but it was @smashdn who "tickled" my curiosity enough to look...I was lucky & loved to see those Pro's, who had been just names, swinging those clubs...Johnny Bulla was one of those Pro's that I'd just read about. And to see Ben Hogan standing next Byron Nelson - what a difference in height!

Maybe, mayde not on the fast backswing....remember this was on 16mm film from a bit over 90 years ago. I remember watching home movies (mostly 8mm or Super8) & it seemed as if we were moving just a tad faster than normal...could have been something a more knowledgeable film person might know...

Ken Venturi was 10 years old in 1941.

Not the  speed of the swing, the move inside they make with arms and hands.

I understand...in the old films, that would also be a wee bit speeded up cuz that might have been inherent in those old film & projectors...I don't know for sure. I just remember the old home videos that were a bit off as we all moved around...some of those old newsreels look the same, especially Pathe films of early English films

Be that is it may, the owner of the program must have gotten his autograph in that program at a later date because it is in there in blue ink.  Also, right above it is "Juan 'Chi Chi' Rodriguez."

Any chance he might have been in the Detroit area at that time? if I remember, Bryon Nelson was a mentor later on.

Have no idea.  It is not mine.  It was only a picture of the program posted by "Ben Hogan" on facebook.
