Perfect iron swing but over the top with partial wedge shots, why?

Recommended Posts

With irons and up into my woods, I have a nice natural motion that comes a couple degrees from the inside.

When I hit partial wedge shots inside 100y or so though, if I don’t massively exaggerate the feel of dropping the club behind me and coming from the inside I hit a gross swipey over the top move that is like -4 or -6 path.

How can I stop doing this? It seems like my takeaway is relatively consistent on an iron vs wedge (attached videos of both)

Pretty simple.  You get your hands and arms too inside early and lift late to get them in position on the full swing.  On the half swing you have to come out in order to get to the ball.

Interesting, like there isn't enough time or room to lift in the shorter shots that makes sense.

Man fixing that will be annoying though if I attempt to fix it throughout the bag, my ballstriking is outstanding right now would hate to mess that up.

Thanks for the info I appreciate it

There are other solutions besides changing your full swing.

#1-On partial shots feel an outside takeaway

#2-The preferred one……go hard left side as soon as you take the club away.

Interesting I'll definitely give those feels some time. On #2 when you say hard left side you mean feel the full weight shift way earlier than I normally would try to? I've found success with a similar feel on greenside chips but never thought about extending that back to 60-70y

It’s much easier to hit partial shots when you don’t feel a shift to the trail side.  Most golfers, including elite golfers, do much better feeling they get Uber left immediately in the takeaway.  It’s the impetus for Hovland’s short game success.

For you, there will be no need to bring the hands out so much to move the swing bottom in front of the ball.

Man this is me. Whenever I'm working hard on my full swing, I'll inevitably use the same feels to try to hit a partial wedge, do it all but slower. It's disastrous. Then I remember to just camp on my left side for the small shots and it works so much better. Lower flight, low point further ahead of ball. Better contact and more spin.

Do you see anyone overdo this move on short wedges? I know objectively it happens to some degree, I just see significantly better results when I feel I keep 80% of my weight on the trail foot for short game.

The problem most people have is when they sway back they don't get back forward so disaster comes. If you start with the weight back, I would imagine it would be hard to go even farther back.

Let me answer it this way,  I have never seen anyone have their optimum short game with more than 40% right at the top

Fair enough and I would agree! I guess I was asking if you can overdo the left move.

I don't have a pressure mat, but I bet I'm 90% left unless I actively try to combat it  (obviously feel does not mean real).
