Guys trip to Charlotte, need help

So, we have 8 guys and the easiest place for us all to get too is Charlotte.  I know the golf isn't great, we don't want to go all the way to Pinehurst.  Any thoughts on places around Charlotte that we could stay and play for 3 days?

I know you don’t want to hear it, but I’d just bite the bullet, and go to Pinehurst or Myrtle.

It's a wasteland of public golf. There's not really any stay and play resorts.  Best you could do is probably rumbling bald resort around lake lure that's still an hour and a half outside the city.  I might suggest Grandover resort but that's in Greensboro which is still over an hour away from charlotte if you're willing to drive.  But yeah bite the bullet and go to pinehurst.

Charlotte is tough choice to look for stay and play. Not really a golf destination. Rock Barn could be an option that’s about an hour away. Old North State Club is private but has a lodge that may offer you a package. 
 

Pinehurst is totally worth the extra drive time.

I wish there was a way to be more encouraging about Charlotte, but there just isn’t.  There isn’t a public course there worth any sort of stay and play trip, and no place that has a couple of courses at the same site.  Fort Mill is good, as is Mooresville, but neither is any sort of “destination” course that you’d want to play several times.  And after that, well…

 

If there is ANY way to do it, fly into Greensboro instead.  Grandover (2 courses) has already been mentioned, and Bryan Park (also 2 courses) is one of the premier public facilities in the country.  On top of that, you’re only a little over an hour from Pinehurst, Tobacco Road, Tot Hill Farm, and a bunch of other really special public golf.

I drive to Charlotte on the regular for football games and it's not that difficult of a day trip from Southern Pines. 1.5 hours from my house. With that said I would look and see how far these courses are

 

Cleghorn, Rocky River, Tanglewood, Cheraw State Park, Rocky River again and Top Golf

The idea that Charlotte doesn’t have good public golf depends on how you define Charlotte. Charlotte is a sprawling city with numerous small and medium towns around - Rock Hill, Çoncord, Mooresville, Gastonia, Pineville, etc. it’s true that within the city of Charlotte proper there’s virtually no decent golf. But within 30-45 minutes drive, depending on where you are, there are many very good courses. North - Verdict Ridge (semi-private), Skybrook; East - Rocky River, Olde Sycamore, Red Bridge, Eagle Chase; South - Springfield, Carolina Lakes, Edgewater.

You’re right, of course, both about the meaning of “Charlotte” and the availability of good courses within 30-45 minutes.

 

I read the OP as looking for a place to stay and play for 3 days, and assumed that meant without much, if any, driving, but that may not be what he meant?

 

But in any case, if you’re going to be making 30-45 minute drives two or three times to get to quality courses, you could make ONE 90 minute drive to Pinehurst, or even Grandover in Greensboro, and be done with it.

From Grandover you could easily play Bryan Park and Tanglewood

Play a Verdict Ridge and Rock Barn 36 one day, but it needs to be a weekday as Verdict is only open to the public on weekdays.

Another 36 day can be Rocky River and Skybrook.

Eagle Chase, Springfield and Edgewater are all worth playing and always in great shape.

 

There are good courses, they're just in the "Greater Charlotte area", which is a large area.

Since youre staying in Steele Creek, you have Tega Cay, Springfield, Fort Mill all pretty close. Waterford is in Rock Hill and a good one. Then it just depends on how far you want to go. If Huntersville isnt too far for you, then Tradition, Skybrook, or Highland Creek are all good imo. I live out on the east side can definitely tell you Olde Sycamore and Emerald Lake are in bad shape. Divide is in pretty good shape but i think its overpriced for the layout personally. 

 

In reality the best Charlotte courses are at least a half hour outside Charlotte...unless were talking private ones.
