A real work in process

Recommended Posts

The grip is the most important fundamental in golf, and your grip is not conducive to playing good golf, almost the complete opposite to be honest. Your right hand is very laid off and to the side/bottom of the club and your left hand is probably the strongest I've ever seen.

I'd spend a significant amount of time and effort getting your grip to a more neutral disposition, and figuring out further issues after that. It's almost not worth trying to troubleshoot anything else given the butterfly effect grip can have on the rest of the swing.

A great model is (like most other things) Tiger Woods. Ben Hogan's book also has a really useful section on grip that is really easy to understand and put into practice

I agree that grip is the first thing to address.

After grip, club head is very closed at top. You have it pointing to sky. Ideally, it should be more aligned with lead forearm.

The next thing is you loop the club the wrong way at transition.

Appreciate all the advice everyone.  I have lesson scheduled for the week after thanksgiving, I’m sure they will address the grip and plane issues.  Anything positive in the swing you see?

When you start in bad positions, the whole swing becomes a chain reaction of compensations.

On the positive, you are doing things the hard way and still manage to get down to the ball and hit it which shows your high level of athleticism. You stand a good chance to become really good once you learn an easier way.

A good in person instructor will help a lot. Stay open minded and listen to them even if it feels weird or they tell you something different than you expect. Ask questions if something doesn’t click. Many things in the golf swing are opposite of intuition. Commit to working on the issue or prescribed drill for at least 1-2 months before making a judgement on the instructor.

Greatly appreciated, I have such a mental block with my grip I’m open to them completely revamping it.  The more I hit the “worst” the grip gets

I believe that. Your whole swing looks like you are trying to compensate for a slice. Overly strong grip, completely shut club face going back and at top, trying to deliver the club on a straight path into the ball by yanking the club over-the-top in transition. Put all these things together and the slice gets worse or you just hit dead straight left, not to mention the contact consistency issues the compensations cause, which then causes you to do more of your incorrect compensations. The mental block is likely from a fear of going right.

I could be wrong, as I said, I am not a pro or qualified to give advice but I lived with a fear of right for a long time doing the same things before I realized my fear of right was the issue.

Remember, there are no quick fixes. It will take time and dedicated focused practice to make the changes.

Personally I really like your takeaway as it doesn't seem to have any of the death moves that most amateur golfers often have. It's pretty nice and one-piece with your body, although your grip does put your arms in a couple weird positions pretty quick after that

Appreciate the input as well, we’ll be glad after a few lessons to hopefully take the grip and then see how it all shakes out
