we are playing kings!

we will be driving to Loch Lomond for Saturday night. Need to find a course between there and gleneagles!

Have not played anything besides Gleneagles in that area since I mainly play links courses. Maybe a local can help you with suggestions.

we will be driving back by Glasgow. Playing prestwick already. Any hidden gem there that’s not troon (open too close they won’t let us on)

I would just play one of the other courses at gleneagles. I did the drive return in the space of a week in October and had Indian at the Dormy House both times, so expensive but so good!

Glasgow and prestwick are really not that close and South.

loch lomond you drive North of Glasgow, then head North along a very slow road!

Matter of fact indeed! I wrote Carnoustie looking to get on the waitlist for a time, provided them my preferred date and the response was, ‘sir, I can assure you there is no waitlist availability on that date, as we will be hosting the Senior Open’. My fault for not checking the calendar. I considered writing back ‘well, assuming I don’t qualify for that…’ but left that part out. They were helpful with follow up questions and I did end up getting on the waitlist for a couple days later.

@jasona93 - my comment was in reference to Muirfield not Carnoustie.  Muirfield staff have always been good to deal with.

Carnoustie was definitely the hardest to deal with.

trying to decide if turnberry is worth it.

If you pass on Turnberry, I would definitely recommend Western Gailes. It’s a fabulous design and classic seaside links that doesn’t get the attention it should.

Western gailes or turnberry? What’s your thoughts?

For me, it’s Turnberry every day. However, I can understand how the price could affect someone’s decision. I haven’t played it since the remodel, but it was fantastic before. Everything I’ve head and read is that the remodel has even taken it to a new level. That being said, if the price is a hurdle Western Gailes is still really good.

Turnberry booked!

now we hope and pray for old course ballot Monday or Tuesday or walk on either one of those days then try to get on as a twosome elsewhere in st Andrews.

what would you rank the other at Andrews courses in order of play?

  • 1 month later...

Anyone have any thoughts on what this new singles thing they are going to announce this month is?

Looks like they booked a college golf tournament while I am there so my chances just lowered to get on!

@hammergolf do you know any of the groups that have guaranteed times? Wondering if it might be worth reaching out to them to see what the cost is for a spot...

There are lots of tour providers but not sure if they would have any spots left for June. In addition most of them try to package the tee time with lodging. Here is a link to a search. Last I heard the spots were going for around $2k, but that might have increased. I would send St. Andrews an email and ask them if the course is closed on the days you are there. They are very helpful and may be able to refer to a provider.

Thanks, It looks like the tee times are for only a few hours each day. Just might mean the 10pm sit and wait game gets earlier??

Hopefully we will be able to get on. 2k for a round of golf is a little steep! I emailed them and asked if course would be open for play or not.

I think if you’re there at 10pm you’ll get on. Make sure to go to the starter shack as soon as you get in town. They will be able to tell you what days have the most openings.

Wont get into town until sunday evening.. Will starter shack be open even thought the course is closed? We play prestwick at 11:48 so I figure we wont be in town until 6ish that evening.

No it won’t be open in the evening. Are you planning on doing the que that night you arrive in town?

Ya, we will hit the Que sunday night. If we don't get on Monday we will try to walk on another course early and then try it again Monday night.

I'm hopeful that since my dad decided to go after his cancer treatments that we will get lucky and get on with the ballot!

Well that sucks..... Wonder how that will work for a tee time for Monday.

Guess now I really need to get in the ballot and hopefully draw the twosome that way.

Don't quote me on this but you should be able to apply for the singles ballot at the Links clubhouse on Sunday. From the article, "or St Andrews Links Clubhouse between 9am-5pm the day before they wish to play." According to https://standrews.com/golf/clubhouses-facilities, the Links Clubhouse is open daily from 7am to 5pm.
