Travis Mathew vs FootJoy

Recommended Posts

TM tops fit a touch slim from my experience and FJ run a bit larger, although someone gave me a FJ shirt and it is tiny, just a size example TM Large chest size is 40-42" and FJ is 42-44". I do have a TM Cloud Hoodie and the Cloud line is really soft, not much give on the hoodie not sure on the 1/4 zip.

Pants I've had the opposite where TM is larger and FJ is slimmer, I have a pair of Open to Close pants, really nice material and solid stretch. One downfall with the TM pants is they only come in 32" inseam and FJ has 3 options. I did have a pair of the Heather Khaki OTC pants and I do have larger thighs and depending on boxers they could be a touch see through, sorry if TMI but good to know. My current pair of OTC pants are black and zero issues.

Pretty sure both have very easy returns and exchanges so could just be smart to buy stuff from each, try them on and return if you have to if no store near by has anything.

For the love of God please do not wear buy TM polos. I'll admit their Cloud hoodie is one of the best out there as far as hoodies go. But be aware its $150 although once again, its one of the best out there.

Their polos are however are unapologetically horrific. To many, myself included, the material used can be compared to materials Nike (or the countless other big brands) uses. Bad. So bad. Two washes and its ready for your local Goodwill. And if you were to compare them to say Peter Millar (a far superior brand), who are in the same price bracket as TM, you would laugh empathetically. It seriously is laughable how TM thinks they can charge what PM charges.

Footjoys are nice.. the athletic line is nice if you like slimfits. I do.

I've only owned a couple of Travis Mathew items but I've been disappointed in both.

One pullover/quarter zip started pilling after a couple of washes. The other is not the least bit windproof and has a very stiff zipper placket that makes it fit funny on me.

No more TM for me. My go-to for polos and pullovers is Dunning.

I like the fit of TM. They are just a little loose on me. FJ polos have always looked and felt baggy on me.

Looking to load up for 2024 ahead with a spree on polos, quarter zips and pants.

Does anyone have a strong preference between TM and FJ? If so, why?

Looking specific at TM cloud quarter zip/hoodie, heater polo and open to close and FJ knit/5pocket and any of their polos.

Can’t speak to their polos, but I have 7

total Cloud 1/4 zips and hoodies and I think they are excellent. The blue hoodie has probably worn the worst, but all of the others have held up well and they get plenty of use. The first version was warmer than the 2.0’s that are out now, so i’d call the current ones more of a mid weight. Warm enough for the mid 40’s to high 50’s depending on your constitution.

I don't like TM polos since the buttons are weird.  The second button is too far up and then the third one is too far down.  It feels like I am either getting strangled or am Jerry Buss.

I got off of Quarter Zips or vests a few years ago - you will never go back if you try this.  FJ were nice quarter zips, but all quarter zips are fine, IMO.

Peter Millar polos fit me very well - have to size up.  Got some Pins & Aces shirts at a local show and they fit really well, but have not sweat in them yet.  I play a lot of golf in button-up Hawaiian shirts... mostly from Jams World out of Hawaii.  If I was single, I would have plenty of dates - people love these and I get hella comments about how I don't look like the normal guys wearing a Polo that they got at the golf shop.

Go and try all of these on.  You might even like some Hagan shirts (Dicks has them) and you can save a lot of money.
