Tucking while Tugging

Recommended Posts

On the other day, I was thinking about an example of swinging action just like in golf, where the left shoulder tugs the double pendulum of the left arm and club creating a whipping action through impact.

Then a thought occurred to me, why not take a look at water skiing sport where a tow boat tugs a skier through various actions like turning and jumping.  I did, and vow, what an eye opener.

What surprised me  most was the powerful swinging of the skier back and forth zipping through the wakes of the tow boat.  How does a skier do that?  Then it occurred to me that this is the same action that I did, a long long time ago, in the playground swing.  I pull on the rope of the playground swing at the right moment, and whizz through the bottom of the swing.

By a skier pulling the rope, and lining his body more inline with the rope, he reduces the distance of his center of mass to the tow boat.  Me pulling the rope of the playground swing, I reduce the effective radius of the rope and gain speed through the bottom. This is what golfers already know that shorter clubs are easier to swing because of their lower moment of inertia. So, by shortening the effective radius of the rope, I reduce the moment of inertia of the swing and go faster.

They do this all the time in launching satellites. To efficiently reach orbital speed, a lot of mass shedding happens along the way.  Can we shed moment of inertia at the right time to achieve greater angular speed through impact?

This is the premise of “tucking through tugging”.  Tucking here is the bending of the left arm at the elbow, effectively reducing the effective length of the left arm to increase angular speed.

I know, I know, this goes against the mantra of traditional golf teaching - “keeping left arm straight”.  But we all can see the tucking of the left arm in the followthrough. Is it beneficial to initiate the tucking before impact?

Here are a couple of beauties in slow motion for us to study.

Jamie Sadlowski

Jordan Spieth

They are obviously tucking with the internal rotation of the left arm before impact.  I prefer tucking with the external rotation of the left arm before impact but I could not find any good video showing that.

Any prior studies about this topic?

The left arm is the control of the swing radius, is there a tradeoff between speed gain to accuracy?
Or this premise may not be valid after all?

Additional Note:
I tried this on my backyard net.  Big fail in practice.
I couldn't tuck effectively before impact, not big enough biceps to counter the centrifugal force.
Well, practice <> principle.

You don't water ski or understand how to turn on skis - it's not pulling on the rope.

I'd leave all this at that - none of the analogies are scientifically or anecdotally useful for talking about a golf swing. And surprise, surprise on the Sadlowski vid - not even subtle, lol.

You claimed the expertise.

Dont hate me just because I use science.

Basically, we are all machines, our motions are subjected to physical laws - good swings, bad swings, waterskiing, playground swinging, .....

It is fun for me trying to figure things out like solving puzzles.  This is also to stimulate my old brain to avoid dementia. And also as an objective with time to spent after retirement to figure out why my golf swing sucked and how to improve,

Now I know the benefit of Sadowski's chicken winging and it brings me joy even it is not for my golf swing because my biceps are not strong enough.

When the skier body is in line with the tugging rope with the pelvis further away from the tow boat, that is maximum moment of inertia, and with the pelvis closer to the tow boat, that is minimum moment of inertia.

So what, it has nothing to do with what you said which is a water skier pulls on the rope to execute turns and jumping, lol.  I'd just leave it alone at this point.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
