Recommended Golf Ball?

Recommended Posts

Tried doing a little search on the site but couldn't find anything super helpful. I know this is strongly based on preference but if I get enough hits on the same ball I'll give that a try!

I'm a mid-handicapper with about a 105mph swing speed. Currently use the new 2024 kirklands and they're fine but trying to find the next step up within the affordability range. I still lose about 2 balls a round so don't want to level up to any of the premium balls.

Recycled ProV1s?

Perhaps some ball hunting is in order? 😄 I haven't done that myself yet, but I am considering it this year for my replacements.

Although, I just bough some Vice golf balls; They're nice looking; so we'll see how they play. Folks swear by them at least in the small sample I've spoken to...

You sound similar to a few friends of mine.  Not sure of prices, but you might consider Callaway's balls below Chrome Soft X. That's what a few friends use.

Maxfli's Tour balls are a great value, despite going up in price a bit.  If you want to purchase new balls, I'd recommend giving them a look.

Otherwise, If cost is a big factor, consider using one of the repurposed golf ball sites and get a premium ball for a discounted price.  People will echo cautions out there on performance and there are some things you need to be aware of, but this is generally the best way to have your cake and eat it too.

There will be sales over the next month or so with the Players and the Masters coming up; you can buy premium offerings from Bridgestone, Taylormade, Titleist, etc., and spend roughly $1.50-$2 per ball for something that's in very good or near mint condition.

Pay for Ballnamic Ballnamic (ballfitting.com). It's Ping's ball fitting tool and costs $40. Cheaper than wasting money on a box of balls that won't fit you.

This. Was a decent match for the Chrome Soft X LS that I was using at the time.

Z-Star Diamond was a 98% match. Switched and haven't thought about testing anything else.

Reality is until you drop some $ on balls and do a bunch of testing, it's really hard to tell. You need to figure out what exactly are you trying to achieve? $ for $, I doubt there is a ball better than what you are playing. Personally I have hit the previous version and new 2024 Kirklands and they hold up quite well to most premium balls (compared to Pro1, Prov1X, Bridgestone Tour B XS, and Maxfli Tour X...those are what I have compared them to). They really are a very good ball.

Plus, if I was loosing 2 balls a round there is no way I am paying more than $30 a dozen.

I’m about a 12 capper and I have to wonder what you are hoping to gain with more premium balls? Now I have some Kirkland and honestly I’m not a big fan. The feel just isn't quite there for me and on my driver I lose 10+ yards. I know that is not everyone’s experience but I’ve used them many times and they just haven't worked well for me.

That said, I also use Pro V1 &. Pro V1x and Vice Pro/Pro+ and I find zero scoring improvement with the higher priced balls. I love both brands and recently took advantage of both companies promotions by going with vice’s current 5+1 and Titleist’s current Loyalty promotion 3+1 to round out my stock for this season. I’m sure I’ll find once again that the less costly Vice balls will serve me just as well and cost a few less tears when they go swimming or wandering off in tall grass. But I still like the Titleist and unfortunately have to admit when I’m playing with my ‘higher class’ friends on nicer courses, vanity tugs a little and I tend to pull out the more reputable ball in order to fit in with my playing partners.

All that to say, if performance is strictly what you are after, there are some great DTC balls out there to choose from. If you are after the ‘upper crust’ then the promos of premium brands are already getting under way.
