Sent My GoodWood to NorCal

Sent this out to NorCal back in January (mainly for the face milling, it was already a very similar finish) and just got it back today. Very happy with how it came out

It looks like he added face milling.  The face was smooth prior.

I will say, I love how it feels but I can’t help but notice that the spacing in the milled face spirals is uneven. Kind of disappointed by that.

The finish looks really nice imo.  I also think adding milling to a smooth face is an improvement...but the milling you added is essentially aesthetic. Won't be any real change in feel anyways.  Don't worry about the unevenness...it still looks great. I get what you are saying though.

Do you notice any change in feel or sound? Curious because I am going to order a similar putter and I’m undecided on face milling. I’m coming from a smooth BeCu Anser so steel will feel better regardless.

Honestly it doesn’t feel or sound different to me (which is what I wanted). I’ve just always loved the look of spiral milling on the face. I intentionally asked that the milling was very light so it wouldn’t change the feel or sound much if at all.

Yeah that would drive me nuts too tbh. Esp for what they charge.  Maybe ask to redo it w light/fine mill double pass

Update- After giving it some thought over the last few days.. I decided to send them an email explaining my disappointment in the lack of attention to detail. I received a call within the hour and the guy that reached out stated that they would be willing to give me credit for the full amount I paid towards another project in the future. Unfortunately that doesn't fix my current putter, and he acknowledged that. But we both agreed that it wouldn't be ideal to take any more weight off the putter or risk getting too shallow and ruin the "GoodWood" engraved on the inner heel. 

 

At the end of the day, it's not an ideal situation and my putter isn't going to be fixed but at least they did something to apologise for it.

IMO They should have refunded you. I would be hesitant to send them anything after that. I;m sure it will likely stop bothering you in time as everything else looks good, but seems like the right thing to do. 

 

Edit: After looking at their pics, this looks pretty typical for them. They aren't timing the RPM and feed rate:

I actually did the same exact thing and was worried he was going to try to say there’s nothing wrong with it.

That's unfortunate. A lot of people would likely never notice, but if you look at any Byron tuna mill its always perfect. 

 

On the bright side, it's a good opportunity to find an old putter and bring it back to life for cheap.

I've had mixed success with NorCal.  Overall good, but the attention to detail is lacking.

 

However, I love you're putter.  Great idea.  I know you'll be rolling it well.

Looks nice.  I prefer the smooth face finish but wouldn’t hate what you did here.  Hope it rolls well for you!

I think this is a good response here. You have a nicely refinished putter now...and you get a nice refinish in the future.
