Doesn't Look Like I'll be Playing Any of These PGA Tour Courses Anytime Soon

Recommended Posts

It is incredibly high prices for sure, but also fairly par for the course.  These PGA Tour tracks have always been incredibly high price wise compared to the relative local competition for as long as I can remember in almost all markets.  They bank on people playing the course not for the golf, but the experience and for being able to say you have played on the course which hosts XYZ tournament.  Really intended for more bucket list types rather than mainstream golfers.

I understand that there is a supply/demand dynamic and that we live in a capitalistic society, but it is a shame that there is such a discrepancy in the pricing of courses even in the TPC network.  I've played multiple rounds at TPC Deere Run for less than $100, and the course is a stern test with pristine conditioning every time. It carries none of the cachet that Sawgrass has, or even the Stadium course, yet you see a 10x price point at Sawgrass and it kind of just makes me shake my head.

I like Deere Run and used to drive there multiple times a year from the western suburbs of Chicago. I don't really understand the argument you are trying to make. There is no comparison between Sawgrass and DR. Also, location definitely plays a factor. Silvis Illinois isn't much of a tourist destination. Also, the average person doesn't know anything about Deere Run or the John Deere classic, sawgrass and phoenix are probably two of the most famous non major course venues.

These golf “experiences” aren’t all that different from other entertainment outlets, where demand is high, like skiing. It wasn’t that long ago that a walk up lift tick was available for under $100. Many are well over $300 now. Just a sign of the times. As mentioned above, it’s a supply and demand equation. I’m glad I was able to hit a number of bucket list courses, like Pebble and Sawgrass, before prices became outrageous.

Kind of valid but one can at least pay $900 for an Ikon pass and ski as many days as they can handle at any Ikon (or Epic or Indy Pass, etc.) resort. Trying to think of the golf equivalent to backcountry touring.

I think the equivalent is going to your local public course to chip and putt (not paying for buckets or a round), or finding a field to just hit balls into. But you’re right, much more limited in what can be accomplished for free.

I’ll have the opposite take than many.  FOR ME it’s those prices are too high at many of the courses.  Someone mentioned $900 for Sawgrass?

That said….if the tee sheet is as full as they want it…maximizing revenue…then they are not “overpriced”.

Agreed. As long as they continue to fill the tee sheets, they'd be idiots not to charge as much as they can. As a consumer I don't like it, but I understand it.

As for the $900 Sawgrass price tag, I remember paying $495 in 2016. I'd love to get back there and play it again someday, but the $900 price tag has me questioning it.

People who aren't important like to feel like they are important, and buying their way on to a "PGA tour" course makes them feel like they are. But they don't realize that the people who are are actually important wouldn't let the PGA tour anywhere near their courses.

What....? Crazy leap and assumption about a person playing a golf course. You sound super bitter and jealous about what other people do with their money.. If you can't afford it just say that lol.

I've never felt "important" about playing golf. You are also comparing public courses (the courses mentioned in the original post) vs private clubs. I get you are talking about places like Seminole, Pine Valley, Cypress etc. But I'd argue there are plenty of "important" members at places like LA CC, Augusta, Muirfield, Riveria, Castle Pines, Valhalla etc.

I mean it might be a little much but there are plenty of bag tag barry's that absolutely put personal worth into playing a famous PGA Tour course for that reason alone.
