Winter golf. Break or not?

I play golf year round. Winters are harsh, especially low temp, humid and very windy, but it’s never a deterrent to go out and play since there’s no snow. 
 

I have always been curious about golf winter breaks. A lot of members here live in places where you’re forced to break in winter. Do simply put your clubs away until spring and don’t miss golf or do you practice indoors, go on golf trips or spend time in sunny Florida or Southern Europe?

Been on many winter trips for golf.  Usually attempt a few indoor sessions to “loosen up” before I go.. it does however take 2-3 games when away to find some semblance of my game.  

 

The indoor sessions aren’t anywhere close to “golfing” though.  Just an opportunity to go through the motions.

After my Parents retired to Florida (where else?), I could visit them in mid-March for my Dad's birthday. I normally would have put away the clubs in early mid-November and MAYBE hit a heated stall outdoor range a bit. So I would pack the clubs, and head down. On the way to their place, I would stop at a course and hit the range and make a time for the following day. Then go out and (most times) shoot the best score of the year. There were little to no expectations and I was just having a nice time. Then by the third round a week later, reality sets in and I start to think. Thinking kills in Golf...

 

These days, they both have passed, so I just hit the heated range every other week or so from Dec. to beginning of March when courses begin to open back up.

I'm in Wisconsin, so I try to get to a simulator once a week in the winter. Once I stop losing golf balls, I will definitely be looking to head south for a week or two.

As someone who lives in a place where golf is only around from about April to October, I often wonder how much better I'd be if golf was available year-round. 

 

But, I also know that I've improved drastically in certain aspects thanks to the off season. Namely course management, short-game (indoor practice area along with Trackman), and equipment fitting.  It's usually about an hr a week that I'd spend at the indoor facilities.   

 

All things considered, I think I'd prefer to have the choice. But, if you're the only one in your regular foursomes taking time off, you may not have a foursome to come back to after a few months.

When we downsized 4 years ago the house had an unfinished basement. We finished the basement and I was able to set a little practice area. First I just got a net and mat. Started out using real balls but stopped after a mishit put a hole in back of the finished wall. Went to Almost Golfballs. They give decent feedback and I added an Optishot since it was the only thing I found that would be useful with foam balls. Not perfect but in a tight space was all I could do. I also play sim golf with my brother in law at a course near us.

I don’t know if you’d be better but you’re never too off.  I play often in summer because of the long days so I’m way sharper than in winter when I play on Saturdays and it’s often too cold and windy to go out and hit balls.
