wedge shaft questions

looking for opinions or data on wedge shafts in relation to iron shafts.  

 

in particular:

1. weight (going to a heavier or lighter wedge shaft)

2. flex (going to a softer/firmer shaft)

3. bend point (going to a low-mid-high bend point)

 

If it is in Spinner shafts for wedges by Howard no need to repeat it, unless an elaboration on your post would be beneficial

There’s no firm rule for any of these specs. In most cases you’ll see players play a flex softer (ie S400 wedge, X100 irons) and a little heavier or same weight, but it’s also common to use the same flex/shaft as your irons (i’ve noticed that many Nippon shaft users on Tour play with the same model in their wedges). But you sometimes you see players go the opposite direction (Min Woo Lee is one example that comes to mind), and play a lighter shaft and/or a completely different profile as their iron shaft

All these questions depend on you, and your desired feel and performance for the club.

 

1. Some people go heavier on wedge shafts, and others match their irons.  My wedges are slightly heavier, but then I use 95 gram shafts.  When I used heavier shafts, I matched the weight across the set.

2. Some people like a softer feel in the wedges, because they rarely go full effort swing with wedges.  Personally, I've never bothered with this.

3.  The most popular wedge shafts are True Temper Dynamic, which are high bend point.  This is because many people struggle with hitting wedges too high.  

 

Personally, my wedge shots spin and stop just fine.  I've never felt the need to use shafts to get more spin.  Other people may feel differently, and that's fine.  Again, all these options are based on the person using the club.

Same shafts as irons, either tipped or using 8 iron spinner method to continue the progression from the irons.

I much prefer my current X100 irons, S400 wedge setup versus anything I have used in the past. I have experimented before with 120 X100's in the irons with 130 X100's in the wedges and that didn't work. I also tried to go lighter and use the same length throughout my wedges with BGT ZNE shafts and that was by FAR the worst. For me, it there is more control with a softer and heavier shaft. As most things go, you need to try things out to see what works for you, but I would suggest the tried-and-true method of going slightly lighter and heavier in the wedges.

It's worth considering how you plan to use the wedge.  Is it a gap where it will be used exclusively for full, square shots?  Is it a 62 degree which you will never play square or use for full shots?

 

The way you plan to use it likely has some bearing on your preferred feel, and my help start you down the right path.

I have always used S400 shafts in my wedges, so i am not sure what the difference would be from a different brand or even the X100 in wedges, I was fitted to S400 in my current irons, so now all my irons have the same shaft, it does help to have almost the same feel throughout the bag...

I’m about to change the shafts in my wedges.

Last year I threw a couple regular flex Nippon 105 gr. wedge shafts in my sand and lob wedges.

I bought new wedges this year, same model but with stock wedge flex True Temper shafts, and they just feel so much heavier. 
Going to reuse my old shafts.

It's difficult to give advice on wedge shafts, it's so personal. 

 

Historically, I've used the same iron shaft in 52', PX 6.0 and use heavier weight TTDG S200 in 58'.

Currently, T100 3i-9i have MMT 105S, while PW, 52 & 58' have low/mid-launch, mid-high bend 120g PX Wedge 6.0 which are surprisingly nice.

I am going through this right now and tested SM10 and MG4 wedges today, both with stock shafts (S200 and DG115?). I play $-Taper 120, and my PW is a 9i shaft. What I experienced is that the MG4 with the DG115 resulted in far more shaft droop than the SM10/S200, but in both cases more than what I have with the $-Taper in my PW. You can see from the results that this extra droop resulted in a doubling of the carry dispersion (circled in red). Note: these aren't full swings, maybe 80% or so.

 

 

Here's a view of the dynamic lie angle and strike location. The extra droop pushed the strike out more towards the toe 2-7mm vs the DG200. For me this is proof I need a heavier shaft - and probably one that is not soft stepped 4x.
