Calculate SG Putting Only

How would I determine strokes gained putting for myself?  
 

Do I record length of each putt then plug it into a formula or calculator relative to my handicap?  Other?

Yeah, it's pretty simple.

• Length of first putt.
• Number of putts to hole out.

That's it. You don't even need the length of the second (or third) putts, because it cancels itself out: if you hit an 8' putt 16' and then hole the second 8' putt, you still end up at 0.5 strokes lost against a PGA Tour player… because you two-putted an 8' putt. (You lose 1 stroke on the first putt by not getting any closer to the hole, then gain 0.5 by holing the second 8' putt.)

You’d just put 8’ and 2 putts into any of the several online calculators.

You can just record the length of first putt and number of proceeding putts.

 

However, if you want in-depth statistics on how well you perform from particular distances, you need to record the length of every putt.

 

I am sure that there are plenty of good apps out there that can do this for you. 

 

If not, you’ll need to find stroke data for your skill level online. I use a google sheets spreadsheet to calculate my strokes gained for everything.

If you are considering working on swing speed, the Stack App now has a putting module and you can track your putts during a round and it will give you a stroked gained analysis broken down per hole.   The putting module has other stuff like a practice routine, etc., but the SG is pretty nice, but I have not used it much.  It will track you against the handicap you input.

So for PGA tour players, 8' is right around 1.5 strokes to hole out. If you're 8' and you take two putts to hole out, then you lost 0.5 strokes putting that hole. From 1', it's basically 1.0, so you lost 0.5 strokes on the first putt (you went from 1.5 to 1.0 and it cost you a stroke to do it).

 

33' I think is where PGA tour players are 2.00 strokes to hole out. So if you hit your first putt from 33' and leave it 8' away and then hole that putt, overall you gained 0 strokes putting, but your first putt was -0.5 (you went from 2.0 to 1.5 and it cost you a stroke to do it) and your second putt you gained 0.5 (you went from 1.5 to 0.0 in one shot).

 

Every Shot Counts has the average strokes to hole out for PGA Tour players. As MBAndrews21 said, you'll need to hunt around on google for strokes to hole out for a typical 6 handicap.

Here's an online  calculator I use.  I have no idea what SG data it is uses but I have a baseline to track my relative improvement.
