Recoil Dart 90 vs MMT 85 Shafts

Recommended Posts

Looking at getting a new set of irons, the Recoil Dart 90 and MMT 85 or 95 are a couple of the shafts available, i've hit the MMT's before but the Dart 90 shafts are not available local, i would like to know more about the Dart 90 before driving a long way to demo, anyone familiar with both shafts? TIA

Not quite apples to apples, but I've got MMT 105's in my irons and a Dart 90 in my Srixon ZX Utility.  My perception is that they are both smooth feeling shafts, and the MMT have a bit more load and kick to them, and maybe a touch higher launch and spin.  I'm still growing into the Dart, but I've definitely had more trouble squaring the face with the Srixon than my normal experience with my 5-iron in the MMT, which may be related to the slightly different bend profiles, but who knows?  Could very easily just be user error since it's both a different head and shaft.  But I would be interested to try the Srixon with an MMT 85 just to see what I think.

I've played both. I currently play the Dart 90, and I agree with this assessment. The Dart's feel more linear.  The MMT feels like it has more kick to it in the middle, which I don't like (i play hzrdus in my woods).

I went this past Saturday to demo the Recoil Dart 90 shafts but unfortunately their power was out and i couldn't any fitting numbers but i did get to hit them on the outdoor range. Irons were the Taylormade P790's, i really hit the shafts well and they felt good, i don't have computer numbers to match with the MMT's i hit before but i like the Dart 90 shaft better.

The Darts are nice shafts. My experience with the Dart 105 vs the MMT 105, was that I was initially really impressed with the Dart 105. I suspect it was slightly better feel, at least IMO.

Once I started playing them though, I had some issues timing my swing. Issues I had not experienced with the MMT 105s I was most recently playing, and Steelfibers before that. In fairness to the Darts, I had never previously gotten along all that well with Recoils (95, 110, etc.), so it is perhaps a profile thing.

Anyway, I ended up going back to the MMT. But this is why we all need to hit, and demo, and play for ourselves. Very swing-dependent. Good luck.

I have tried really hard to like the Dart in a couple of utility iron heads and have concluded it's just not for me.  I'm by no means a great ball striker, but I'm a reasonably good player and my ZX Utility 3-iron with the Dart 90S is just a total black sheep sitting between my P790 5-iron with the MMT 105S and my SIM 5-wood with the AD-IZ 7X.  Clearly I need something with more load and release and the Dart just isn't it.  Not sure if I want to throw good money after bad and try other shafts, or just ditch the utility iron experiment altogether.

After going in on the Dart in hybrids (75H F4), and the Dart 105 F4 in irons, and eventually ditching all of them, I believe the ship has sailed for me on the Dart for the foreseeable future. I go back to a HZRDUS Smoke Black in a hybrid, or MMT 105 in irons, and it is back home again.

Always fun to try different shafts, but proper profiles and fitting prevail in the end.

Playing the Dart 90 stiff in the new TaylorMade P-DHY 4  and it is performing very well. Not a big fan of the MMT iron shafts, which feel a little dead to me. Really was not a fan of the Recoil shafts in the past but to me the Dart feels more stable. I wish it weighed 10 more grams but no complaints. Easy to launch. I have a moderate to fast transition.

Typically have liked Steelfibers and the Dart seems more similar to those than it does to a Recoil.
