Utility iron shaft steel vs graphite.

I have the Srixon ZX Mkii 3 UI in both graphite and steel, which matches my iron shafts, N.S. Pro 950GH Neo DST.

 

The graphite is the stock Recoil Dart F4 and it is standard length at 39.75”. I just had the steel shaft lengthened and it is now 40.25”. All else being equal, which should go further? I have no idea on spin with these shafts. The ball is the new AVX, I am getting about the same distance, 200 yards, from both clubs, when I expected the longer steel shafted club to add 10 to 15 yards.

What holds you down from going to a range and test it, you said you have both clubs.. 

the shafts are in the same weight range and the same flex range as well? The steel may FEEL more direct and crisper and the Recoil will feel smoother than the Nippon which is a smooth shaft as well. I would bet you will see no real difference from the 0.5 inch shaft length difference and you can go with the one that suits you more in feel and dispersion

Longer steel shaft may make the club slightly heavier overall. Thus whatever gains you were expecting from the longer shaft may have been lost because you’re not able to generate the same clubhead speed?

 

And maybe the contact with the graphite shaft is more centred?

 

Why not just go for the 2 utility if you want the extra distance?

Good points. I have been on the range today, with these clubs and the previous model ZX 2UI, also with the Nippon steel shaft at the longer length. I have tried alongside those a u505 with a Hzrdus black shaft, 6.0.

 

I thought I would see more distance difference, I don't. To be honest, these are four clubs that end up doing much the same thing. Dispersion, the two granite clubs, at shorter length have a slight advantage. Likely I am not getting enough from the 2UI, due weight and swing speed. Still, it's all fun to try!
